did you have an alum prop, or a stainless steel?

Im still betting on a bad cable though.

Also, take a pic of your prop. Even if you dont have a digital camera, use a cell phone. If you don't have one, borrow one and email yourself the pics.

With motor running (and "ear muff" on, water on) I shifted into gear (reverse). Motor revved up as if engaging but prop and shaft didn't move. Water flowed as normal. I will double check cabling (for humor sake if nothing else) and will get pictures tomorrow. There is a guy right up the street with a lot of boats in his yard (that I see him working on). I might stop to see what he charges.

It's a painted aluminum prop.

engine reved you because you gave it gas. It wasn't trying to engage anything, thats the cables job.

Well, when I get home I will check out the cables. Now, assuming I need to remove the lower unit, how do you separate it from the shaft? Is there a connection on top?

Also, why would I have water coming out of my lower end fluid bottom screw hole? My new fluid came out a creamy white/yellow. Should there be a gasket between the lower unit and upper section? Reminds me of a blown head gasket in a car.

I want a boater's stimulus check!!!!

By the way, the cables are brand new (installed last year with new shift controls). Is there something internally that could be the problem?

Been reading this thread from the begining, it rdoes seam like shes not going in gear, maybe something was missed during the cable install, and it has become disconnected or out of adjustment.

If you blew up something in the lower there would almost certainly be metal in the lower oil and the prop doesn't look like you hit anything hard enough to break it.

Having said that both my lowers that blew up were at full throttle in deep water, I believe from previous prop strikes that cracked the gear and it finally let go.( I don't fish the skinny water anymore, too expensive)

There are several things in the lower that could have come loose that would cause it not to go into gear, you have quite the mystery here, interested to find out the cause.

There should be a break in between the lower and mid section at the front of the motor that you can confirm the shift rod is moving, if it is that makes the problem in the lower.

Re: Johnson Outboard Lower End Help Needed!!!!

Having seen my pictures, does it look like she's shifting properly? Also, aside from removing the lower end bolts, what do I need to do to separate the shaft to drop her out? I noticed a screw/bolt on the right side that goes into my water screen. Does that need to come out too? I still don't get why when spinning the prop in gear it sounds like gears meshing as if they weren't getting lube. I am wondering also why my fluid is coming out milky, and with some water too. Must be a seal gone bad.

On the question of spinning the prop and it sounding like gears all sort of grinding inside when you spin it by hand... I ran into a similar thing when checking out a lower unit I bought to replace mine and when I spun the prop it sounded terrible and didn't move very well. Turns out it was the water pump impeller rubbing against the sides that made the sound because there was no water in there to either lubricate its movement or to keep the rubber slick when rubbing. I ended up pulling off the water pump housing to see and sure enough that is what it was so when you spin the prop and hear a sound like 'gears grinding' then you may just be hearing that impeller. Or, you may actually be hearing gears grinding. This is just an alternative you might consider.

Re: Johnson Outboard Lower End Help Needed!!!!

Well, had a mechanic come by who said it was the lower end "knuckle" that is bad. Said $1,000 to replace/repair.

Placed an ad on Craigslist and have had several contacts regarding getting another lower end. One guy thought his motor went bad so he offered to sell me ($200) his (which has a new water pump and gears seals). He called back stating that his motor wasn't bad but would rebuild a second one he had (with new pump/seals) because he had offered me the other one.

He hopes to have in done Thursday and hopefully I'l have it ready for the weekend.
