Help me somebody PLEEEEZE! I own a 18 Ft hydrosport with a 115 johnson 1998. 2 stroke. Can someone out there please tell me what the problem is with this engine. 3 times I have had it rebuilt/new powerhead. First time it had salt deposits in the intake. Second time it froze after rebuild and this 3rd time it received a new powerhead. After 10 mos it seized again. The mechanic says it overheated, which is what I suspect happened before. I also learned from the first breakdown that Johnson had problems with this engine block, but they said it was a problem corrected. My question is , if it is due to overheating what are the causes. There is no indication when I operate it that it is overheating. It has an alert system. Everything seems to be working correctly. I tend to run it rich, but not too much, I always flush the engine after use. This time when I removed the carbuerater cover there was water and fine sand at the intakes. There was no water on the spark plugs when I removed them. Is anyone familiar with any continueing problems with this engine? Thank you in advance for any helpful suggestions/opinions.

You havn't given us enough information to help. Can you tell us in some detail what the enine was doing for each failure? What troubleshooting did your mechanic do and what did he find? Whaen you got a rebuild was it a complete engine or just the powerhead? Was any of the repair covered under warranty?

I suspect that the mechanic did not find the source of the first problem and it simply repeated itself and will continue to do so.

Just based on what you said the first thing I would do is find another mechanic.

Re: johnson overheating 115 1998

I have asked my mechanic to check the thermostats, He said they seem to be fine, they are hard to get to, and they usually don`t go bad. HMMMMMM!!!He says the problem is either running lean or water intrusion.I always run my engine rich or just right. When taken apart the pistons were scorched, the bearing was scorched. He said the bearing is what caused the engine to freeze, due to it overheating. He says the water pump is working and the impellor. So what is it that would cause this engine to overheat? The indicator alarm did not warn me of overheating, but he says that it is working properly.

Your thermostats are under a large nut on the center of each head. Not hard to get to at all. I have to wonder about your mechanic.
