Johnson problem

Hi folks, can anyone offer advice on this?

My Johnson "Stinger" 75hp, 3 cylinders,
starts first time, runs fine, engages into
forward and reverse fine, doesn't foul plugs.
But this is all in my driveway with my water
hose attached.
In the river, once warmed, when I engage gear
and slowly open her up, she dies. The only
way I get going is by engaging her into
"slow forward" then chugging around in a circle
for about ten minutes gradually gaining more
revs while attempting not to conk out.

I have had the carbs off for cleaning and
they appeared fine.

I am presuming that the only difference
between my drive way and the river is the
slight increase in pressure hindering
my propeller from turning freely but I am
at a loss in figuring out what's wrong.

Any advice appreciated.

cheers, Craig ( U.K. )

Re: Johnson problem

Water pressure difference is alot more than you would think.
Have you check to make sure all plugs are firing?
Have you tried closing your choke a bit while this problem is happening? If so it could be your carbs high speed is clogged.
Did it ever run right?
Have you checked your timing?
Reviewing other posts using the search function would be very helpfull as this is a very common question.

Craig,

It has been my experience that hesitation problems in 3 cyl. loopers is frequently carb. troubles.

I would suggest you get a manual and perform the following.

1. Rebuild carbs.
2. Perform Synch. & Link.
3. Check timing advance.

Craig, I am having similar problems with my 70 hp stinger 2. Starts idles great then go to put the hammer down and it chugs for 10-20 seconds then takes off. Have you been able to figure anything out? Mine runs great in the drive. I'm thinking possibly hs jets?
