Johnson QD 19 Lower Unit

I am in the process of replacing the shift rod on a Johnson QD 19 and was about to put the skeg back on when I realized that I don't remember or didn't notice the orientation of the tab on the inside end of the gearcase head/bearing assembly. Neither the skeg nor the lower unit housing itself seem to have an indent for it to lock into. Anybody have any ideas as to whether the little tab should be pointed up, down, or to either side? Does it even matter?

Just had that problem with my Evinrude 10018. The sked had a slot in it for the gearcase tab to go into. Don't know why it appears yours doesn't. sorry I can't provide more help than that.

I took it all apart again and can't seem to recognize an obvious place for the tab sit. There is an opening under the gearcase head but it doesn't line up with the tab. There are two areas of the lower unit housing that might catch it but the are the housing for the fasteners. Maybe it doesn't matter? I assume the tab is there to stop the head from spinning, if that is the case it shouldn't matter where it is so long as it eventually spins against a part of the lower unit or skeg and stops. Any other ideas???

If you're talking about the slot in the brass-colored 'head', there's usually a pin in the housing at the corresponding spot when you install propshaft. I've seen 'em w/no pin like yours that never looked to have a pin. I put the slot there and called it good.. no problems. I assume that's just how they put it together when new.

Sorry. the head/bearing assy is on the other end.. I believe you just orient that tab toward powerhead and that's it.

Yup tab up. (Or down if you have the gearcase in a bench holder, as the gearcase will be upside down)
