I just aquired a very clean unit and noticed the lower unit only has one screw for the oil. How exactly do I go about putting in the proper amount? Do I drain it and fill it with it on its side until it reaches the threads? Is there a specific amount I put in? It's a dark brown color but not milky or any color besides it being used oil.

The water pump impeller was stiff so I soaked it in hot water and installed it backwards so the arms would stay in contact with the walls of the pump area. But I already ordered a new seal (the one below the impeller and the impeller itself just so I know it's good to go. It pumps water really well and running for about a half hour the engine runs nice and cool and I can hold my hand on it comfortably. I'm going to rebuild/ clean the carb just so I know it's clean. Other than that it fires up in just a couple pulls and runs smooth for a single cylinder. I paid $130 for it and I'm happy with it so far :) sorry for the long post just figured I'd give a bit of info on it since I'm new here.

You have to tip the motor until the gear oil runs out one hole to fill and drain fill it on it's side.. Change that waterpump impeller soon what you did did not make it work better old is old. You may have made it worse by bending it the opposite way you don't want anything to break off and and go in the motor and plug it up.

The arms were still very flexible but we're slightly deformed. The new impeller will be here this week.

With the engine on its side do I fill the gear case until I can't get anymore in and then I'm good to go? I'm used to the lower units that have a vent and fill plug, not just one.

Other than these two things this little motor is ready for my canoe and the river. It beats paddling and doesn't burn much gas. And since it's never seen saltwater nothing is corroded so that's always a plus!

Well today I just drained all the old oil out and tilted the engine on its side on the stand and filled it just as full as I could get it to the bottom of the threads. I used some 80-90w LSD gear oil that has anti-wear and foaming additives in it. I took it out today with the mount I built for my canoe with a friend and it did fantastic! Just need to modify the mount to lower the engine even lower into the water because of the noise and cavitation at a certain rpm.

The correct quantity of oil is 0.75 ounces

I think I have more in there than that bit it was nasty in there so I'll just drain it and consider this a flush and put in 3/4 of an ounce as I'm not sure on exactly how much I put in there.
