Does anyone have a source for the nylon gears in these units? I have one that the end broke off and there is no fixing it. I don't want to give up this trusty unit because of it! Thanks for any help.

Try going to a marina or boat repair place. They might have a old unit laying around that has a good part. There are a lot of places that work on boats.

Go to the antique outboard club's website www.aomci.org and place a free want ad on their Webvertize page. I see those controls at swap meets all the time. Usually with broken handles and missing parts.
