The torch trick works well. Coil and roller bearing drop right out. Reinstalling is tricky without the special tool. I've done it with a long 1/2" drive socket extension, my collection of big sockets, and a hammer.
It's hard to believe those coils could come apart like that. They look so solid and no moving parts. How does it happen?

it happens when the bearings are stuffed. the whole prop shaft starts to get to much end play and the hub (the bit with the spring on it!) starts to drag into the coil. The coil windings are only fixed in with a plastic resin. If the hub comes int contact with that while turning it will wear the resin away, and then rip the coil apart. The whole process only takes a few seconds once the parts start to touch.

Hey lark2004, what do you mean by stuffed bearings. I had the same thing happen to me. Denis 67 I know what you mean by trying to get the forward gear out. When I disabled my lower unit I did not get it out. I was going to but was not sure how to get it out. The mechanic told me in my case I did not have to get it out of the housing but said if I ever have to I would have to hit the housing with a heavy rubber mallet to knoc it out. Never tried. If you decide to heat the foot go easy, I can't remember if there is any aluminium down there or not but I know that won't take too much heat. As for the coil if you can get it out I wonder if one of those shops that specialise in rebuilding starters, windings...might be able to rebuild your coil. Might be worth looking into it. Good luck and let me know how you make out.
Phil.

I meant that the front bearing is a tapered roller bearing. With time this will wear out. These motors are all very old. The hub runs very close to the coil and it does not take much to run into it. If you have the gearcase apart, replace that bearing.

Looks like your on the right track. Just lube the seals with grease and make sure you have all the bearrings in place where the drive shaft meets the prop. shaft. In my unit those bearrings are loose and can fall in the foot easilly.
Where did you get that unit for $60 ? That's a great deal. If you don't want the old reverse coil, let me know, I might buy it off you.
Phil.

Hey guys, i forgot to notice when i disassembled ,the blue wire in the lower unit for the reverse coil, does it just sit on top of the clutches, cause its not very long and nothing is moving in that part of the engine, i know once it gets to the top it is held into some sort of plastic wedge with a screw and a large washer but from the coil to the wedge i cant seem to figure it out, any help would be nice...
