I have a 60 hp johnson that is an early 80's model. A friend of mine put it from forward to reverse too quick and sheered of the key on the shaft that connects the flywheel. I think it is out of time but not really sure how to put it back in time. The top plug had spark and then I pulled the flywheel and put a new key in it now there is no spark. Thanks!

Re: johnson timing problem

im pretty sure it should still generate spark, even out of time. maybe somebody will confirm this.

K_Gates.... Shifting from forward to reverse too fast will not shear a flywheel key. You'll tear a driveshaft in half first. What will shear a flywheel key is not torquing the flywheel nut properly.

That nut, on that model, must absolutely be torqued to 105 foot pounds. Any less will result in a sheared key. The key must be installed so that the straight edge of the key is vertical with the engine... not aligned with the crankshaft taper!

Now that the key has been sheared, it is important that the tapers of the flywheel and the crankshaft be checked thoroughly and cleaned of all defects before installing another key.

This may not be the cause of the "no spark" problem, but it must be corrected before going any further. Keep us informed.
