johnson to evinrude

ive got a 71 johnson 60hp and a 73 evinrude 65hp the johnson is a long shaft 20" and the evinrude is a short shaft around 16" from bracket to plate can i take the midsection from the jpohnson and put it on the evinrude will it interchange and if not then how can i go about making a lowering plate for my aluminum starcraft or can i cut the transom down an inch or two so it will fit right what would i have to do there ive heard from a friend that it just causes alot of other problems if i did cut it. any help would be great cause my lil bomber bass boat is a lil to heavy for my van to pull it seems like.

I only have experience working on a 71 50hp. that being said. i guess it could work if the bolt pattern is the same. instead of a shift rod on the 73 you would route the wires from the 71 lower unit in it's place. you would also have to use the 71 controls. this is all speculation on my part. I own a 71 50hp and have looked at a 73 65hp to buy, but never did. so that is the only experience I have with those two motors. let us know if you try it and how well it worked for ya.

no it will not work. splines on drive shaft are different. 71 is hydro-electric shift, 73 is hydro-mechanical shift. the motor would be within 10 lbs of each other, i see no weight advantage, to changing the motors.
