I have a 2 wire trim motor that I am about to wire up. On a 2 wire system is a solenoid required or are the relays the way it is done or both?

Re: johnson trim

you should have black box with relays in it. the relays reverse the polarity to the 2 wire motor.

No solenoid is needed on 2 wire with relays. Do you have the relay box?

No i bought the trim system second hand and it just came with the mount and the 2 wire coming out of the motor. Where could I get this black box. I did check to see if it worked by touching the wires to opposite post on the batt. and it worked well just need to know how to wire it.

The relay system is pretty complicated for DIY, but find a good schematic here: http://www.maxrules.com/graphics/omc_pics/T&Twiring.gif

What shows as yellow in the diagram is actually green.

One of the salvage yards should have a good relay box for you.

You can make a system with a reversing solenoid - use the search botton and look for "reversing solenoid". https://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2156011207391333&item=11-3149&catname

Re: johnson trim

I could wire either but think it makes sense to go with the revearsing solenoid. I found one for $30 dollars that has a warrenty. Thanks for the help!
