I have a 91 Johnson 70 hp. and when I turn the key on the engine warning alarm comes on and stays on all the time with a steady high pitch. It's only suppose to beep once to let you know it's working. Is there any info out there on how they work. I unhooked the oil resavoir, no change, unhooked the temp sender, no change, and bought a new $65.00 alarm module. What to do next. The tach also deosn't work so I changed the rectifier and got the charging system working but the tach. still doesn't work, probably a bad tach but this shouldn't cause the warning alarm to be on steady as soon as I turn on the key should it ? does anyone have a wiring diagram of this warning alarm ? the alarm has 1 black wire, one tan or gray, and two purple to one terminal. Thanks for your help

The tan wire from the temp sensor is apparently grounded (pinched or cut) somewhere along its run to the warning horn.

Wasn't a grounded wire. I unpluged the wire from the engine at the harness pull apart and tested the wire to the engine ground where battery neg. is bolted and then tried the fuse panel gnd. and no continuity on either side. I also tested from engine wiring harness on engine to engine gnd. with all sensors still hooked up and still no continuity. Tested from one end of tan wire to other end and did get continuity so wire is good anyways. Problem not solved yet.

With the black/yellow wire connected to the black horn ground, you have over 300 volts from the power pack going to the horn while the motor is running.

Hook up the horn ground correctly. If it still sounds, unhook the "VRO" wiring connector and see if it stops.

this link shows the keyswitch wiring:

Yes your right and I went back and changed my last reply. I did find my problem I think. I unhooked the vro tank sensor and it stopped blowing. What comfused me was when I tried testing the wires on the tank and I didn't get any continuity so I thought it wasn't bad. Well I learned there are electronic parts in that sensor and it doesn't work like a mechanical switch. Will try to find a new oil tank pickup kit tomorrow. Thanks for your time.
