johnson years and hp swaps

my grandfather decided not to buy a new motor but rebuild or change powerheads on the one he has now, his is an 87 or 88 johnson 110, the boat is rated for 170hp, what powerhead could you use with tha mid and lower and what years could change with each other

To keep things really simple - any V4 crossflow powerhead from 1979 & newer is a direct bolt on. There are some very minor things like mounting bosses that may - may - have to be addressed but no big deal.

Your 110 has the good porting and tuning so don't expect to see any power gains by going to an older (flywheel rated) 140. If your main goal is more power, buy more. Get a 60* or 90* V4 looper or a 60* V6.
