Hi, I have two SMC 8-port switches that I need to daisy-chain together.

There are 9 rj45 sockets along each one, labelled as shown below.

Do I use a normal patch cable or does it have to be a crossover one?
Can I plug the connecting cable into any port or does it have to be the one way over on the right hand side (hole 9).

You should be able to use a normal patch cable. Put one end in the crossover port on the first (marked CC in your drawing), and the other end in a regular port in the other.

what Scooch said. If your CC port is already in use on both switches, then you can use a cross-over cable in two normal ports.

Thanks guys I will give it a try and see what happens. The "cc" is actually not cc....I think its a symbol to represent crossover?

Bearcat... also may not be USING all the ports, but for locaiton..

I have 2 in my house, 8 port and a 5 port each only using 2 ports, but on opposite sides of the house instead of doing home runs (was lazy, home runs to the switch are preferable)

Man, that is quite a peer network to have 14 ports available for! Or is this within a more formal network somewhere?

Most of those little switches these days autosense whether it is a straighht thru or crossover anyway, as you discovered.

If it gets any larger I'd be considering a real $witch which is much more efficient at keeping all those information packets sailing happily and efficiently along. But those little switches sure do work well for the money!

Tip: if ever they weird out and start fighting, unplug the power and restart them. I once saw one which occasionally wigged out & caused some grief until we figured out where the problem was coming from. This little eight port switch took out everything in the mdf, basically shutting down the whole school!

Re: Joining two network switches?

Well your predictions were correct Bearcat....I started having major problems with computers not being able to get on to the network....and finally (after three quarters of a day), I figured out that some of the ports on the switches were not working.
I restarted the switches but no joy, its still causing hassle....the guilty ports are intermittently working. I need to use 13 of the available 14 ports....one port on each switch is taken up by having to link the two 8 port switches together...

So I've ordered this Netgear 24 port switch. I hope it does the job! http://www.expansys.ie/product.asp?code=107490
