Jumping out of gear?

I have a 1987 force 125HP. It runs great. When I take off it seems to "jump" out of gear for just a second, It repeats the problem until I back off the power. Once I level out the throttle it quits happening, but I cannot go past 35 or 40 percent throttle or it starts happening again. It may not be jumping out of gear, but something is definatly slipping or skipping. I have had a few different mechanics check it out but it has stumped them. It does not do it when out of the water and running, only under load in the water. Any suggestions would be awesome.

Re: Jumping out of gear?

I would check to see if its a spun hub on the prop.
If you can mark a line on the hub and prop then take it out for a test run.
when you get it to where you are able to inspect the prop. then if its spun the line will be off set from
where you first marked it.
There is a rubber type of boot that holds the prop to the prop splines and after time it gets old,
and can no longer hold the prop the way it suppose to.

Like Bentle says possible spun hub in the prop.
But it's possible the shift linkage is not adjusted right and the clutch dog is shot.
Slow shifting or out of adjustment will kill the dog.
Only jumping out of gear when it's under load.
A spun hub would eventually let loose completly and just spin.
Do what he suggests with marking the prop. Then check the dog.
