Hello yall! Just getting into this stuff and would love to know what you guy think. I just bought my first boat ever as you can see by the title line. This boat has been setting for the past 3 years, the engine ran when it was parked but i have no clue about anything else when it comes to boats. I paid $300 for this boat and trailer. Hopefully i didn't buy something that cant be used. I am a Subaru Tech so i am hoping that anything this boat needs i should be able to do myself. If any of you guys can point me in a direction on where i can get manuals on the engine and the stern drive i would appericate it. Any info you have would be helpful. Thank you :)

welcome to the mob. where you located?

you won't have trouble doing anything needed on that motor/drivetrain. and you even have more than your accustomed 2" clearance between the valve covers and frame rails! ;) the Murkcruiser manuals can be hard to find in hard copy but DO NOT waste your time on an aftermarket manual from Seloc.

motor is the old Chevy II engine, AKA 2/3 of a "stovebolt" six. main thing you won't be used to is open cooling system that uses an impeller in the outdrive to hoist the water to the block which then uses the std water pump to circulate the cooling water, which then dumps out the exhaust. no magic to resurrecting it IF it's been winterized and you don't have any block cracks in water jackets due to not draining block...do comp test, then tune-up, impeller in outdrive, hoses as needed, and take a hard look at the various bellows and boots between the gimbal housing and outdrive leg.....these do the standard turn-to-rock plan over years and can sink you if they're leaky

at $300, you should be OK even if you find a "project killer" issue...you can part it and make that back. how are your floors and transom? you'll find that people here can walk you through about anything altho you'll have to endure a few jibes about glass boats and shrill demands for ever more pictures.....

Thanks barato,

I live in Western Maryland in the mountains, more like West Virginia. The floor is a little rough i actually stepped throught it last night so I am sure that is going to have to come up. The seats are shot and the alt is not putting out and voltage (hope i can get a new one at local auto store) all of the bellows seem to be tore and the throttle seems tight (have been told that normal) I havent tried cranking the engine yet as i want to put fresh oil in it first (10w40 ok?) I knew going into this would be some work and i am hoping that i can have her up and running for the next summer if the kiddos let me work on her ( I have two right now one is 4 one is 2 and one on the way ;) ). The poor boat hasnt had a cover on it for the past 7years so i am sure that i am going to come across more problems. I really hope that I can use this boat as a learn project and as a reason for my and my son to spend some time together and teach him along the way.

Welcome Aboard!
Glass or tin? What is this poor thing made of? The throttle being "tight" is not normal. You will be changing the shift and throttle cables shortly..lol
For your motor, what year is this boat?
Here is some good reading for now

http://www.mercstuff.com/howdoi.htm

Let me know the year and I will send you a link to the manual.
Also, just so you know..Do NOT attempt to fire that motor up unless you have "ear muffs" on the lower unit with water feeding it from the garden hose.
I knew zero about this motor 2 years ago, and from this site's help actually enjoyed some great times out on the water with my 120hp.

oh boy. you have got a Project with capital P. but she at least starts.

first. keeping you and the kids on the face of the planet. because I/O engines combine various fuel vapor sources and various ignition sources under one cover, they are a big risk to go BOOM. the people at Shriner's Burn Hospital are nice but you really don't want to be visiting your kids there. many aspects of marine engines, usually the external stuff like carbs, fuel pumps, alternators, starters are NOT the same as automotive versions, as they're designed to reduce the likelihood of those vapors and sparks getting out. using an automotive alternator creates a big ignition risk and could theoretically get you a ticket from the USCG or waterfuzz; DO NOT do this. NAPA still can get many parts for these motors in their marine section. be SURE your blower operates correctly and run it for at least 30 sec before you start engine unless you have doghouse cover off.

the various bellows are a PITA to change but you can get a kit that includes all necessary bits for <150. but before you put too much time/effort into the drivetrain, find out how bad your hull work is going to be, price your materials, and decide if you really want to get into it. if floor is rotten, odds are good that stuff below it is too due to water flowing downward. then you need to take a hard look at transom since this may well be rotted too. if boat has been left uncovered in your area, it's had many years of snow and snowmelt in it. you may find out why so many of us here like tin hulls that only have a few easy-to-replace bits to rot............

GREAT year..lol
My Holiday I just sold is a 1968, but tin.
Before you go all crazy on the motor..
You really REALLY need to evaluate that hull being FG.
If you stepped through the deck..that means TONS of rot.
Uncovered for 7 years kills most every glass boat.
That is why we are 98% Tin Men here.
You need to drill small areas in the lower area of the transom, from the inside of the boat.
If you get wet anything, well, it is fixable but would be a major project.
Also, push down hard on the outdrive, and look at the transom, is it moving? making cracking noise?
Did the lower unit fall off? all bad.

BEST of luck, I'll be pulling for you

ok guys. I have come to the realization that this boat is going to need a total gut job and i am the kid of person that likes projects ;) so if anyone can direct me to some links on how to rebuild the transom and the stringers that would be some help. Also if i can get some direction on where do i begin to remove the engine and the lower leg. I will post some pics up here so you all can get a good laugh. I just love her lines.

Thanks again

nuttin wrong with that, and i hope we haven't gotten you too discouraged. i'm totally down with the idea of fixing up something old just cuz you love it....ask me about the 1979 Westy i have $12K in.....just be aware that it won't be worth 1/4 of your resto cost even when it's done so you gotta do those jobs for your own happiness. not much expertise on this subforum for glass work though. i'd suggest running a search on iBoats for "transom replacement" or "stringer replacement", and also try same search terms on youtube....i'll bet someone has shot video of the process. you might want to watch all the videos you can before diving in. if you haven't worked with fiberglass repair before, it is one nasty itchy awful job cutting out the old stuff. start by buying a big arse shop vac and some 55 gallon contractor bags.

motor is easy to pull; was talking with one of our members last night and he's got the motor pull even on his 21' down to 25 minutes. likewise, outdrive leg is easy to remove....i think i recall 4 nuts to remove. see, there is some good news here.

we'd love to see pix, and not just to laugh at. lots of us will be cheering you on, albeit while wincing at the thought of fiberglass dust all over one's body and blocking one's pores.....

Outdrive removal is easy..
3 nuts each side of the top end.
Make sure it is in FWD before pulling the drive.

Like Jas posted, the Merc forum will guide you through.
I suggest a "search" on keywords there as ithas been asked a gazillion times, even by me a couple years ago.

Re: Just bought a 68 Starcraft Newport V 16' I.O. 120 Merc (First boat ever)

About this time last year I traded an AR 15 for my 1969 Newport V I/O 120 HP. We did the walk around and I guy I got it from turned the key and it amazingly fired right up. The engine was solid. You might be asking what is the catch, funny thing there isn't one. I saw her on craigslist and we traded. It took me sometime to remodel and fix her up. She had a few nics and scratches, but over-all she was in great shape. There were a few chips in her gelcoat, but there were no leaks. I replaced her carpet, put in van seats that I got for $100.00, and they worked out fine. The oil was brand new. This year I am going to replace the impeller and give her new oil.

Slide4.JPGSlide5.JPGSlide6.JPG

We named her "Lazy Daisy" she was originally Avacado green, now she is navy blue with a very nice bimini top.

I don't know much but what I do know I will share with you. Learned alot from: http://www.youtube.com/user/FriscoJarretts

Jarrett went through hell and back and now he is really enjoying his boat.

Have fun!!!!

Okay guys... i know it has been a long time but I am getting ready to tear into the ol girl... I have come to find the the outboard has be replaced with a 140hp model... is this going to effect things? do i need to try to find the correct one... or will the old 120merc have enough power to still twist the prop fast enough? i was told that the gearing is different between the 120hp and the 140hp lowers... any advice would be helpful. Thanks...
