I just bought my first bass boat. After many arguments with the wife I convinced her it would be a good investment. Well, lucky me, first time I took it out I heard a warning beep. I cruised for a while with no issues. Then I slowed down in some shallow water (wanting to take it slow) and the beep started. I had no idea what it was. It was a beep every second or so. When I went faster the beep got faster then eventually quit as my rpm's got higher. When I got to the loanding (slower speeds again) the beep started again. It continued beeping until I got it trailered and shut off. I checked the Oil tank and it's full. Is this a vro issue or heat issue? Do I need to prime the oil before starting? There is a primer bulb, but the previous owner said he never did. What should I do? And of course the Wife is saying "I told ya so". UGHHHHHHH!

A constant beep is overheat.

A momentary beep is oil flow or fuel restriction.

Since you do not know the motor history, you need to do two things.

1. Service the water pump-impeller.

2. Service the oil tank.

To Service the oil tank-do this.

1. Remove the tank.

2. Discard the old oil.

3. Replace the filter sock.

4. Refill with oil. (TCW-3 rated)

5. Draw a line on the tank so you can determine oil useage.

6. Reprime.

7. MIX 50:1 WITH THE FUEL UNTIL YOU DETERMINE THE ENGINE IS DRAWING FROM THE TANK.

Read this regarding oil injection.

http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000028

Thanks for the info. I do know that the oil is fresh, from the previous owner. I will do what you suggested. I was wondering why it would beep ...beep...etc and then at higher rpm stop
Any idea?

by the way, i am mechanically challeneged individual.

Also, I just noticed that the primer bulb is rock hard. Is that normal?

It may have had an air bubble in the oil line, especially if the line was just reconnected or the tank was empty. What you're describing sounds like a warning it wasn't pumping oil at low rpm. It could be as simple as that or perhaps the pulse line (that operates the fuel/oil pump) is partially blocked.

Great point. I wonder if it was an air bubble because the previous owner filled the oil just before I picked it up. Does anyone know if the primer bulb should be hard even when the motor is not running. And, should I attempt to prime it each time I go out to run it?
