My 1972 StarCraft 18 SS tinny is all original, I am the second owner and it was looked after very well by the PO. The transom is solid as is the deck other than one spot between the drivers seat and the gunwale. It just goes to show that even if a boat is built with unsealed wood, but is covered and looked after it will last 41 years.

All glass, no foam, no wood, at 12 I couldn't figure out why you would use wood in a glass boat. The boats were small, and back then my 35HP 1958 Evinrude was a big motor. The newer boats were just glass too.

Ribs, Stringers, Deck, Transom??? All Glass???

The boat I had at 12 was wood covered with glass, my dads was all glass, zero wood. The ones I made later had no wood at all, no foam either.

My aluminum jet boat was an inboard center console jet when I picked it up, I gutted it and converted it to an outboard tiller jet, as I said, my only mistake was using foam under the floor.

1961 Lone Star "Fleetwood Sport", this was a glass runabout, the floor, and transom were shot, my stringers didn't have any wood, they were of fiberglass construction and had a steel strip running down the top edge. Transom and new floor all installed well, tabbed in screwed, glued and tattooed. All of the new stuff was done with glass, as directed here. I will re-install the cut cap in the back as soon as the weather breaks. This thing is rock solid, IMO it will be better than what came out of the factory. Outboards are rebuilt, and ready to be installed, but I have lot's of cosmetic stuff, complete interior- staying original. and I need to repaint the boat. This boat should last me the rest of my life.
#2 is a tinny, yes I have both. It will require a new floor and transom, carpet and vinyl. This one was abused. This is my daily fishing and chick magnet boat, 1996 Spectrum "sport fish". 19 footer with an 90 merc outboard. It too should last the rest of my life once she's finished.

There is always a debate on What material to use for transoms and stringers? How long will it last? Never want to do it again!! Soooo I'm curious! How many of our members currently are still floating around in boats that they have owned for more than 5 yrs! 10 yrs! 15 yrs! Whatever! Have they been Restored? By You? By someone else? Are they Tin, Glass, Wood? Just to get an idea. I'm of the opinion that a Wood Transom and Wood Stringer boat when sealed properly with Glass and Resin and maintained properly should last 40 + years. My 1961 has the same stringers and Transom. Don't WANT this to become and Argument, just want to see how LONG some of these boats can last IF they are built and maintained properly without using all the NEW and IMPROVED Space Aged Materials.:joyous:

I cant help you there woody .. but the new and improved "space aged" prepreg will blow you away :)

Yes I have been apart of the prepreg .. but you are correct in suggesting that All Rebuilds will hold together just right for ages to pass. As long as your method of repair is correct then go for it.

You just have to suggest a Method of repairing a Poly build boat of the past. .. there is no suggestions .. only How to. IMHO there is only ONE way to repair Poly glass repairs ..

Pre-preg repairs or other Kevlar (etc) is a totally different repair method ..

As far as the DIY repairs and rebuilds .. Polyester is the correct build base of Any/Most boat rebuilds .. You know it an I know it.

Ayuh,.... I didn't find the Web, til New Years Eve, 1999, at my Mom's new Christmas 'puter...(bought my own, in less than 2 weeks)

A few years before that I'd bought my Starcraft Islander, 221...
It was quite literally from a little ole lady that drove it to Church, on a island, on Sundays,...
All original but the long block(frozen of course), seatin', deck, side panels, Everything...

Now, 'bout 15 or so years later, NOTHIN' at All is original, it's All been Bondoized, stem to stern... :D
Most of which was done soon after we'd met,...

The drive was 1st to go, due to a midnight groundin',...
That lead to a Bigger motor, for the wrong drive I'd bought...
That lead to the new transom, 'n deckin',...(All PT plywood)
Then all the upper hull bulkheads needed replacin', the masonite, 'n mahogany rotted at the ends,...
I built jigs, 'n welded new aluminum 1s outa conduit...

She spent her 1st few years on the wagon durin' the week, 'n trollin' 18 hour days on the weekends,...
Then I bought a couple of on the water river houses...
Since then, she sits in her slip from April to November, Waitin' to go for a fishin' troll or evenin' cruise....

Seein's I'm usually too busy workin' on the houses, Boatin' time is Nothin' like it was when she lived on the wagon,.....

To date, None of my repairs/ rebuilds have failed me,....
