A jack plate vertically raises your motor up and down. Allowing you to more easily find the sweet-spot for a certain combination of boat, motor, and prop. They come in both manual or hydraulic versions that are fully adjustable. The other advantage with a jack plate is that it will offset the motor back from the transom, which can also increase performance on some boats.<br /><br />Some people use them to compensate for a mis-match between transom height and motor shaft length, but most use them to tweak the operating height of the anti-ventilation plate in the quest for more speed. Less bottom end dragging in the water = more speed.
