A puller? Why can't I just use a couple tools and pull it off?

Be careful not to damage the the spindle. Read the sticky files and other posts on how to properly remove the flywheel. You can rent a puller for free at Autozone etc. if you don't want to purchase one, but have patience. You are too close to enjoying your engine to rush the repair and risk serious and expensive damage to the crankshaft spindle. Removal of the flywheel is relatively straight forward. If the flywheel releases easily the rest is a piece of cake. If it resists use pentrating oil and gentle persuasion. The main point here is use the correct tools, procedures, and patience.

I think the local boat shop here in town is going to let me work on it at their shop and use their puller. If I need help I will see if I can't sneak an employee over to help me free of charge lol

no worries, iowa. getting the flywheel of is the hardest part, and even that is pretty easy with the puller. Once it's off, replacing the points, condensers and coils is a piece of cake. Since it's your first time, go slow and only replace one side of the ignition components at a time using the old half as a guide for the new half. Here's a pic of what your magneto/ignition should look like when it's all done. Keep us posted. We can walk you through any trouble you may have. After you've done it once, you'll be able to do it again in no time.

Wow, replacing the coils was so much easier than what I expected. She is running again, one of the problems that I noticed after I changed the coils was it was not going into neutral properly and was giving me problems I noticed it after it would not kick off after they were replaced now it starts up right away. I do have one more question, where does the water pee out of? I know there is an exhaust pipe and a pee hole, what I'm asking is which holes do what is the hole that lowest the exhaust or pee hole?

It's not gonna pee no matter how much unclogging you do to it. These old motors dont have a tell tale or pee hole on em. Your water will come out of the exaust. If you dont know if the impeller is any good or not, just replace it. Its pretty simple. Just did my 56 10 horse the other day and it only takes 20 minutes or so.

BassBlaster is right. These older motors don't have a dedicated "pee hole". They spit water out of the leg on the outboard. You should get warm mix of exhaust fumes and water out of the outboard leg. always run the motor in a bucket with water filled up to just a few inches below the exhaust port too, so yu don't ruin the waterpump and/or overheat the engine.

I had it backed into the river to let it run in neutral, it really had a flow of water was bubblin up like it, idk if that was just the exhaust or what. How do I know if the water pump is good or not then?

Yes, thats where the water should be spraying out. If you have no water coming from there, you need to rebuild your water pump. A complete rebuild kit is only $18.89 here at iboats and is a snap to replace!!

Can you let me know how to get it out and where it's even located? I'm sorry for the bother everyone but like I said this is my first boat and I have never worked on them either. I'm sure by the end of this summer I will know a lot

Remove the little cover plate just above the lower unit to expose the shifter linkage. Remove the bottom bolt. Then take out the 5 bolts that hold the lower unit on. The lower unit will drop out and the water pump is on top of the lower unit. The impeller is under the water pump housing. Remove the 4 screws that hold the housing on.

If you go to the "top secret file" there is a thread with lots of pics.

Awesome deal, the boat place here let me borrow a book on the whole motor so I can read up on it and it shows how to replace it. should not be a problem. Soon as I get that done and put it in the water and move around I will post a video and some pictures of the boat. $500 for the boat and this motor not a bad deal only $70 in parts now I should be good to go, assuming the lower unit is good. There wasn't any shards of medal in the oil when i changed it out.

impellar is replaced and we got water flow.. now that i had it running longer i found a small issue i am sure it just needs a small adjusting. when it's running it seems to have a mind of its own and it revs up really high and kind of sticks there how do i fix that?

Sounds like a carb issue to me. Have you cleaned and rebuilt the carbs yet?

Now that you've gotten it running and have found that it's sound I think it's time to get serious about your restoration. I've said it before and I'll say it again. These old motors can be every bit as reliable and dependable as any new motor. The difference is that 100% of the responsibility for that reliability lies with us. OMC did their part many years ago. You want to replace any "consumable" items before you take the motor out on the water. That means the pull start cord, the pull start return spring, coils, points, condensers, plug wires, spark plugs, carb kit, float, all fuel hoses (including the fuel tank double hose), connector o-rings, fuel tank rebuild kit, Water pump (I like to do the complete kit on a new to me motor), The nylon pin for the vertical throttle shaft and lower unit seals (if they're leaking). Any one of which two-bit parts can end your boating day and turn you into an aquatic pedestrian as quickly as any catastrophic engine failure can.

We really can't expect a 50 year old anything to sit around for 20 years and then go out and work perfectly all day. They need our help. Good luck!

Cheers.......................Todd
