I say it may have never been run.The grease on the moving choke and advance looks original. If it was used,Id have to think the inside of the carb would be pretty nasty,UNLESS ,the guy drained it.Its really a nice piece for display, keep a watch out for an old wood boat to put her on.

Thanks, you are right on on the carb grease. There are a few places on motor that look to be original grease. One thing I did notice on this motor. You can't hardly move the tiller handle. Maybe that's why it was never run. Could the tiller handle problem be that the original grease just got hard on the stator plate?? Thanks to all that have responded. Certainly is interesting to have this old of motor that was used very little or maybe never. Thanks Mettyfish

I would gently pull all the throttle linkages apart and thoroughly clean off the antique, solified grease and repack it all with new. Including the tiller handle assembly. That old grease is probably hard enough that you could chip it away with a knife.:D
Doing this, will also give you a good chance to inspect everything.

The original carb float is cork with shellac, ethanol will eat that up.
New plastic float is $10.

It's kind of a toss-up- if you do the maintenance, it will chip the paint off of the screws, and lower the value. So all you can do is look at it. It's not that perfect- the scuff marks on the hood, for example. There was a guy on ebay selling a mid 60's 33 hp in the original shipping crate a while back!

If it were me, I'd probably do the maintenance and enjoy it- carefully. It's virtually assured the coils and water pump are bad, or will go bad shortly after firing it up. I love those era motors- I collect 57's. My 5-1/2 is nearly as nice as yours. I disagree with the discoloration on the exhaust, though. Mine is still perfect. I have seen the earlier green ones with discoloration, though.

As for value- who knows? Here in FL, I have to pay more for really clean examples, and/or pay a lot of shipping to get them here from up north. I got my 5-1/2 for $200, and it was worth it to me. I've had others tell me I paid 'way too much'. Mine has definitely been run, though. If I had the time and money, I'd go to the upper midwest and bring back a truckload of clean, fresh water motors!

The usage on this motor should be measured in minutes, not hours .......... WOW!!
