Re: just had one hell of a shock

to prevent this from happening:
stop touching spark plug leads on running engines, or wear thick gloves (still no guarantee)

there's 20,000 volts there - it goes where it wants, and you are as good a path as any

Go out to your garage or driveway and try the same thing with your car's sparkplug lead while it is running and see if that shocking sensation happens also.

If so, then you may need professional help which we cannot give you here.

Re: just had one hell of a shock

im guessing you have done this before slate and have not been shocked. electricity follows basic rules and one of them is the path of least resistance. so standing in a fiberglass boat in rubber soled shoes and making sure you are not with in 1/2" of anything metal you can pull a plug lead and not get the crap knocked out of you. its realy a dangerous way to test the engine as you have found out especially if you add a little water than all bets are off. you can buy plug pliers that are rated to protect you from the spark to carry out the test. on muti-cylinder engines you should never touch the leads or caps while the engine is running with your hands as you may not be able to break free until it runs out of gas or you pass out. the best way to check for lead and cap leakage is to run the motor at night time as you will be able to see the sparks jumping from the leads. if you learn something from the experiance then welcome to the club

Re: just had one hell of a shock

if you get her indoors to hold both plugs while you start it up, she can have a very cheap and very quick perm.
save a fortune on the hairdressers.

Re: just had one hell of a shock

You're supposed to get your buddy to do it for you and laugh at him when he gets shocked. You can also use rubber handles pliers, but I would advise against it. Spark plug testers are quick, cheap and easy to use and don't hurt nearly as much.

Re: just had one hell of a shock

ah well. live and learn. sounds like you've almost got her running again. compression is the most important issue. all the rest can be fixed with relative ease, and it sounds like the spark is fine, which only leaves fuel. that generally means a carb cleaning/rebuild.

Re: just had one hell of a shock

I see. Well lets do some conversions into proper units ;) (3 meter = 9 ft. boat, 24 lt. = 6 gallon tank). I wouldn't expect speeds much above 15 mph, if that. However, you may want to experiment with the trim/tilt as well as the motor height. I use a tiller extender on my motor that allows me to move for/aft as needed to balance the load. It's just a piece of PVC with a few slits in one end to allow it to slip over the stock twist grip and help in place with a few pipe clamps. I love it. It cost practically nothing and it also allows me to stand while underway. Here are some vids of rigs similar to yours that may be helpful and give you an idea of what to expect.

Re: just had one hell of a shock

Hello again Slate. If you're not getting the speeds seen in the vids, I would double check the spark and/or compression. These old motors can/do start and run surprisingly well on only cylinder. You should get a nice "snapping" blue spark from each plug, capable of jumping a 1/4" gap with ease. Assuming the spark and compression checkout, all that remains is fuel. The prop looks stock and appears to be in decent condition. I doubt that changing it would make much of a difference. However, if you remove the prop and look on the backside of the hub, you should find a part number stamped on to the part. What year is the motor by the way?
