don't think he will find points on a 2001 motor, but try the easy things first, like the cut out on the control box with the lanyard attatched, also I guess your motor will have two power packs so both would not die at the same time!

Disconnect the big harness plug at the engine and jump the starter solenoid. If the engine starts, the problem is in the harness or control box (ignition switch or kill switch). If still no start, very likely power pack problem.

When I did the spark Test There was no indication of spark which would be mean the powerpack is gone there is no other way juice goes from the starter to the engine correct??

Re: Just Will Not Start

There is no big harness plug but the next step is to seperate the boat harness from the motor harness.

Then check for spark again. We really suspect the key switch or the kill switch.

Re: Just Will Not Start

Nope. Follow the boat wiring harness to up under the hood. There will be some connectors. Undo them so the wiring harness in the boat is not connected to the harness on the motor. Do not disconnect anything but the boat harness. Put the power pack back on and hook it up. Make sure its grounded.

Then, and only then, check for spark.

I like this. I can't tell from the photo - is the grounding clip anything special? Thanks for posting this.

Ground clip is just a standard clip from Rat Shack or somewhere. I found it in my garage in a box of junk. Any clip should work. The threaded studs are actually long bolts from ACE with the heads clipped off. The strip of aluminum is from Home Depot.

I can't take credit for the design. I can't remember who, but another iboat member came up with it first.

EDIT: Found the thread. SoLittle came up with it first.

Re: Just Will Not Start

Thanks again BoatBuoy - I do believe I have all the parts in the, um, highly organized spare parts area of my garage. Definitely have bolts, if not actual left over threaded rod stock or studs. Have multiple pieces of thick aluminum kept from minor boat mods. Various clips, screws washers, and a big box of wire scraps. Gee I wonder if I have any wood scraps :) Thanks also to SoLittle. I'm always impressed and jealous of folks that can think of these sorts of things.
