hi on my mercuy 4 stroke 6 hp out board there is an Oil pressure indicator light that lights up when i pull the starting chord - is this indicating that there is pressure or that there is a problem?

There is no problem if the light goes out a few seconds after the engine is started. When you turn the ignition on there is no oil pressure so the light is on. After the engine starts, oil pressure will build up and the light will go out. Check your oil level then start the motor.

Thanks - no it does that - and my oil level is good with brand new oil thats what baffled me a bit when pulling starter, put my mind at ease thankyou

So you're aware, the service manual indicates the red light is to go on or off (change status) when the oil pressure reaches 3.5 +/- 0.7 psi.
