I"m a painter and in the winter I get slow. So I like to do side jobs as a way for money, anyway I was wondering if anyone knows a marina or person who would need help and can pay me by way of helping me work on my engine, there's nothing wrong but I would want to overhaul it this year( impeller, head gaskets, lower unit. Just take stuff apart make sure it is in good order. It is a 1987 Johnson 88 SPL

It is a great motor, but trim /tilt o-rings can be changed it leaks alittle the piston feels a rough too and my father had the 18 h.p evinrude, which he never performed any maintenence on, and the thing overheated, I opened the head and it was salt encrusted, I was able to fix it, nothing got scorched, but I don't want that to happen to my johnson (haha)also I have the manual, but let me just ask do I have to take the lower unit off to change the impeller?

Yes you do, but it is an easy job. Release the shift rod and take all of the bolts out of the lower unit, then when you get it down, just follow your manual. It's almost self explanatory though.
