I've got a boat that I'm going through and I've spent a lot of time reading post on this site, which is awsome! I've learned that once wood get's wet, rot is inevitable. My question is, why did the manufacturers design and build boats knowing this fact? Just wondering.

Hi and welcome , in the 80s and the early 90 , they built them cheap so you would need a new boat in 8 to 10 years. now they are much better , some dont use any wood at all !! John

The wood in my 40 year old Searay is solid as a rock.
I have an all wood hydroplane that is pushing 30 years old - solid.
It can be done.

Re: Just Wondering

there were not bad boats, just bad owners who did not cover them. when left out in the elements, anything will deteriorate.

its called planned obsolesence......they hadent figgured that out in the early years when they just trued to make everything strong......

there are guys here....that are replacing every peice of material that has issues....

they are not replacing the foam....the wood they replace ...is with composite materials....its a really expencive rebuild.......but they will last indefinately
