Pick up a new set of spark plugs as well. make sure you gap them to .040. I picked up a set of Champion L77 JC4 for my 75 115 from Auto Zone for $4.89. Cant beat it lol

change out your lower unit oil and check your prop seal!

also try running the UL-77V that doesn't have an electrode......I put them in my 65hp because the OEM owner's manual said to run them and it runs 10 times better! I haven't fouled a plug in 3 years running them...........I take them out during the winter, wrap them in a fuel/oil mix drenched rag and sealed in a ziploc in the house. I place my old L77 JC4s in the engine after I fog into the cylinder with WD-40........for WINTER storage!!!

Clean the UL-77Vs in some fresh fuel, wipe them clean, re-install and light 'em up for Springtime!

Re: k little more help with my new boat with 1972 125hp evinrude

you have a hydro-electric shift lower unit. must use special oil in lower unit.

thank to Joe Reeves for this.

The shifting setup of the lower unit is what's called a "Hydro Electric Shift", which is quite complex consisting of voltage being applied to solenoids in the lower unit which in turn change oil passages via a oil pump that supplies various pressure on a spring loaded shifter dog. The wires leading to the lower unit (at the powerhead) are "Green" and "Blue". The engine must be running or cranking over in order to shift out of forward gear.

You CAN NOT use HI VIS lube in that lower unit. You MUST USE what OMC calls "Premium Blend" lube, commonly called "Type C". (A thinner lube)

Note: The engine must be running OR have the driveshaft turning by some other means in order for the engine to shift.

In neutral, you need 12v to the "Green" wire.
In reverse, you need 12v to both wires, the "Green" one and the "Blue" one.
In forward, there should be no voltage to either wire. (The spring loaded shifter dog forces the unit into forward gear)

To check the lower unit for proper shifting to make sure you have no trouble there, remove the spark plugs to avoid problems and to allow a higher cranking speed.

This next step eliminates the actual shift switch in case problems may exist there.... Disconnect the blue & green wires at the knife connectors (the rubber insulated boots) leading to the lower unit at the powerhead, then using jumpers, take voltage direct from the starter solenoid to apply voltage to the "Green" wire for neutral, then both wires 'Green" & "Blue" for reverse (Remember the engine must be cranking over in order to shift).
With no voltage applied, the unit should be in forward. No need for a ground jumper... the lower unit's already grounded. You may crank the engine with the key switch or by energizing the starter solenoid with a jumper wire.

show me documented proof that wd40 can somehow ruin the internal parts of an engine and doesn't displace moisture and I will give up on using wd40 for fogging my cylinders! I personally used MANY cans of WD40 to dry a partially submerged Diesel Generator on a submarine I served on and was able to make 90% of the repairs underway until our next Port!

Take that to the bank..........you WON'T show me any other proof! This is the US Navy Submarine Fleet at it's best.......

I agree with Roscoe, WD 40 displaces moisture, it does not coat the metal to keep the moisture from causing rust, which fogging oil does.

diesel is a lot different than a 2 stroke.

one more question sorry to ask so much but with my particular motor, is there anything that i can really mess up on the carb being an inexperienced boat mechanic with a repair manual and ok tools in hand. by removing it to clean it and replace gaskets and such?

You'll need two carb kits.

it DOES coat and protect from elements/rust.........

show me the stroke of a diesel and how it's different from a 2 stroke marine engine and I'll show you the difference being a timed injector with no spark to a spark plug system that BOTH use a scavenging air system.........

I apologize for hijacking your thread.....I just don't like it when guys only say something to try and downplay or badmouth someone else's response. I don't know about you but I put my pants on one leg at a time and my experiences are just as valid as anyone else's.......

That's a great engine-big carbs and high compression heads. Should run great for you. On your "new" engine, I'd consider taking the thermostat housing apart and replace the thermostat. It comes under the heading of normal preventative maintenance. On engines with a lot of hours, it is also good to do a decarb on the powerhead. It gets rid of carbon on the rings-helps compression and idling. See your local Bombardier dealer for a can of Engine Tuner..
