Just Bought a 1975 Trojan f26 and the original owner had added 8 inches on the bottom of the keel starting from the front all the way to the back this brings up my question will adding this keel extension help or hurt in reguards to planing,"stability",and well just all around drag issues. As aresultof this the boat will not go above 3100 Rpm and wont go over 16 MPH it has a 14x10 non cupped prop this is a bad issue when u want to go to stellwagen bank and it take 2.5 hrs to get there any help would be awsome

Re: Keel Extension

Please include your engine, horsepower, and approximate weight of your boat. It sounds like you have a serious under power problem.

Re: Keel Extension

The only way I could see that kel addition affecting the performance is that it may be messing up the water stream to the prop. How is the back end of the keel extension finished off? If the trailing edge is plumb & cut off square it may be causing some problems. I don't see that as being the difference between say 14 knots (16 mph) and 20 knots (23 knots). -- Oh yes, you said the engine won't do more than 3100 RPM, I can't see the keel extension causing that problem. If the engine is anywhere around 300 CID I don't think it should have a problem turning that prop (it's not oversize). Is the bottom clean? is the prop clean?

Re: Keel Extension

Trojan's are well engineered and manufactured boat's, do you have any clue why someone would add an additional 8" to the keel? What's it made of mahogany or laminated wood strips. Unless the previous owner decided it would some how or other soften the ride in head seas or help prevent rolling I can't imagine why the modification was done.

Would like to hear if you have talked to owner or broker about this

PS no way can you add 20 some odd feet of 8" keel and improve planing. (Unless composit that's a bunch of weight) How wide is it anyway?
