Re: Keel repair

The pictures come up so small hard to see anything, and I hit the link in the other thread you have to look at them and that did not work for me anyway.

Re: Keel repair

Hard to tell from the pics but what I can see is that this is not a hard fix. I see some gel coat work, and maybe some glass resin work if that is a crack in that one picture. But really all I am seeing is mostly gel from these pics.

Same here, looks like an easy fix... Grind/sand and feather away from the damage until you have everything smooth. If there is any cracking, or deep fiberglass gouges, lay in some CSM and resin, let it cure, sand it all smooth and re-gelcoat, or paint. Since it's a repair and the unaffected areas appear to be in decent shape, I'd probably just roll on new gelcoat and prepare to sand, sand, and sand some more and then buff and polish to the desired shine...

Re: Keel repair

pics 1 2 3 4
are all fiberglass repairs as well.
the major hit under the garboard plug is dangerously close to getting thru the glass.

but this isnt a major fix...unless you take it to a pro.....then that is a 700 buk repair.

under the drain....grind the gellcoat off the bottom area 3 inches around the scar....
take the pb mix that is posted on the first page of the forum and smear that stuff into the rough areas....you can even re shape the transom v and bottom....
then glass over it....any time you use pb....you must glass over it.

then repair the gellcoat as per noprmal.

the strake issue is a gell repair.....except the strale at the transom...that will need glass as well.

the gashes....in pic 2 and 3 in post 9. there are different ways you can fix them.....depending on the depth...you could just sand them out..... or mix up a gell paste and scrape fix them

(scrape fix means after the gell has been scuffed and cleaned with acetone.....just use a bondo sperader and scrape some gellcoat over the area till smooth....then re finish)

matching the gellcoat finish is a dark art.....but you are in white and under the boat...so its a good place to learn.....
mix unwaxed white....with either tan or grey.....that looks more tan than grey.....to test the color...smear some gellcoat on the area...you will see the difference right away.
if you are too dark....pour out half the mix you have and add more white gellcoat.....if you are too dark...you cannot go back unless you pour half off

Re: Keel repair

This is repair should be ground and glassed ..

Remove the drain.
Grind off the gel till its kinda uniform for the repair area.
Lam 1.5 oz mat and Poly Lam resin ( NOT GP poly but Lam resin ).
Fair out and coat with gel.

For a Pro to do Just the main repair your looking at 800+ labor and 300 in materials ( depending on how bad they stick it to you and how much Factory matched gel is ) .. shop supplies sometimes can cost 50 bucks + getting it off the trailer .. shore and put back on the trailer .. 180 bucks ..

You will need to get that off the trailer for a proper job you know.

Proshop will be around 1300-1500 depending.

Hope this helps you in some regard ..

Re: Keel repair

90 bucks an hour can add up quick ..

The last Sea Ray gel for a QT was 120.00 COST !! ..

VE Resin is almost 80 bucks a gallon ..

So you have 200 bucks just in resin and gel alone! LOL .. yes .. you might be underbidding ;) ..

For labor .. do you think you can grind/glass/fair/spray/sand/finish buff ( dont forget about pulling it off the trailer ) in 8 hrs ? ..

Time it out oops and get back ;) ..

Hey, stop trying to convince Oops he has to charge more.

I am doing the maps.google.com thing as we speak. Hmmm. He is only 2600 miles away (4200km). Do you make house calls? :)

I will be doing some glassing with my sailboat build. With that though it is epoxy, apply glass, then more coats of epoxy until weave is filled - then sand, sand and sand. Is this sort of the same?

 last time i bought factory gell.....the stuff was carp.....would not get hard...even with a 3% mekp mix......now i match the gellcoat unless it is an odd color that my pigments cant get.
i only see about 4 hours actual labor.....lol....but you never know till you see the glass under the gellcoat ;)

yup i do.....lol. :D
but at 2600 km....i think YD is closer....lol

if i remember correctly he is in mich....somewhere around the great lakes.....and you are in ny.....however.....i would like to see NY city and the statue of liberty....lol

as far as your sail boat....that is a different story....we will need to see pics of that on a seperate thread.....each type of repair is different.
and sanding epoxy is not fun !

Use spectrum .. they have better matches now as opposed to years ago.

I like to use a Base color to start with to color match. ( HINT get purple pigment ;) not kidding .. ).

Your 4 hours are for Pros and with proper setups and Actual Time on JOB .. not clean up or the etc's .

There is no way you can repair this damage in 4 hrs .. not perfectly. You will have an hour just in color matching..then mebbe an other hour rematching the gel if your First match didnt swing correctly.. there is 2 hours right there just in color matching.

Yes the actual repair might take 3 hrs for a timewatched on hand tool/material laying up. You might forget about cleaning the dust off the shop floor and calling times to order or empty the garbage can .. or wash his boat off after you just flew a few million particles of glass all over the place.

Just to mention a few.. again..you still have to take the boat off the trailer and put it back on. You gonna do this .. or is the Yard guys gonna do this ?

You see.. the difference of doing it Yourself or having a Yard do this is apples and oranges.

I do understand whats being suggested .. im with ya bro .. but we are Pros and I dont expect our " real time hours " are even close to the members that are asking for help here on the forums.

Peace :)
