Keel wear?

I was under my boat the other day and noticed for several feet down the keel the gelcoat is gone from wear, I wouldn't think this is a serious problem since the Gelcoat is probably the thinnest part of the hull but I don't know, That's why I'm here, to ask? Also should I do anything to protect it from further damage?

i get under there and patch it with marine tex. and don't beach it so hard. or adjust your rollers which ever is doing it. if you don't , it could start blistering.

Re: Keel wear?

I assume this is a trailered boat. If it's just the gel coat that's gone, which is normal on boat that gets beached often, then it's not a good thing, but normally doesn't cause any problems either. Trailered boats are not usually in the water long enough for the few things that could go wrong to take place. If its just the gel coat, then buy some gel coat to match it or tint it to get it closer and paint some on the worn area, it needs to be dry, clean and sanded first though. After you sand down the area to make it look better again put a keel gaurd type product on so it won't happen again.

Thanks guys. I probably don't even need to worry about matching the gel coat since I had to crawl under the boat to even discover the problem. Guess this will be my weekend project.
