Re: Kenmore Freezer Quit

If we do go for a replacement, any input on reliable replacement brands?

Other than "features", are the "guts" (compressor- ice maker, etc. )to a $900 unit, that much different, that a $2300 one?

Samsung gets high JD Powers comsumer ratings, but get trashed in buyer blogs, for endless problems.

Menards has better prices for the same models as Lowes, but are the units physically the same?

The wife is getting antsy for a functioning fridge.

The teeth grinding continues.

If you like and USE those bells and whistles, that is fine,,,,,,,,but however that is more stuff open for failure. All appliances we get are basic and simple. Sometimes I think people buy the latest version to keep up with the Jones phenomenon. "Hey yall, looky whut we dun got!",,,,,,then never use those features :D

I think if you go out to any chain kinda store, you will have a new fridge today for about the price your looking for. It will be plain with an icemaker, but functional.

I suggest getting a bit of experience and figure out how to fix your old one. Sell it and re-coup some of the money for the new one.

Good points.

Personally, all I need is cold, freezing and ice, but It's not always about me. :)

Just wondering if the more costly ones, have better compressors, etc. I believe our Kenmore was a "middle" priced/feature model, which really I can't complain, as it has ran for 7 years with no problems. Hearing of people having major problems 2 months or 2 years after purchase, make choices more difficult.

I'll probably try to fix the Kenmore. If I can't, I'll "part" it out, as the cheap plastic drawers sells for $50 each, $35 used.

It all depends on who has the contract to furnish Sears with the compressors. Many of the different brands will have the same manufacture of compressor. Only difference that I would see is the size of capacity of the compressor.

I prefer what is called a schroll compressor by Copeland. However, I'm not aware that they are putting these in residential fridges. Many companies that make fridges here now install out of country made compressors. Just another one of the products that was once made here.

An electrical failure can cause overheating, posing a serious fire hazard
TODAY staff
updated 6:29 a.m. CT, Tues., March. 10, 2009

Maytag Corp. of Newton, Iowa is recalling about 1.6 million refrigerators due to an electrical failure in the relay ? the component that turns on the refrigerator?s compressor ? that can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.
Maytag has received 41 reports of refrigerator relay ignition, including 16 reports of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.
The recall includes certain Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators. The affected refrigerators were manufactured in black, bisque, white and stainless steel. They have model and serial numbers printed on a label located on the top middle or left upper side of the refrigerator liner and have the following model and serial number combinations:
On side-by-side refrigerators, serial numbers ending in AA, AC, AE, AG, AJ, AL, AN, AP, AR, AT, AV, AX, CA, CC, CE, CG, CJ, CL, ZB, ZD, ZF, ZH, ZK, ZM, ZQ, ZS, ZU, ZW, ZY and ZZ, and model numbers beginning with ARS, CS, JC, JS, MS, MZ and PS.
On top-freezer refrigerators, serial numbers ending in AA, AC, AE, AG, AJ, AL, AN, AP, AR, AT, AV, AX, ZK, ZM, ZQ, ZS, ZU, ZW, ZY and ZZ, and model numbers beginning with AT, CT, MT and PT.
Refrigerators with freezers on the bottom are not included in the recall.
Manufactured in the U.S., the recalled refrigerators were sold in department and appliance stores and by homebuilders nationwide from January 2001 through January 2004. They sold for between about $350 and $1600.
Consumers who think they may have a refrigerator included in the recall should contact Maytag to find out. If their refrigerator is included in the recall, they can schedule a free in-home repair; they should not return the refrigerator to where it was purchased.
For more information, consumers can call Maytag toll-free at (866) 533-9817, or visit the Web site http://www.repair.maytag.com/. :D

How did your freezer turn out? Did you fix it? What ended up being wrong?

We replaced it, as we wer in a time crunch. I'm going to order the replacement for the burnt up part, redo the wires and try the "smoke test".

If it passes, I'll sell it. If not, I might make it into a worm bin. I'll part out the drawers on ebay, that are actually quite valuable.

as long as the relay didn't stick to the compressor terminals the new relay should be fine.I changed man of those that smoked on yours. If you have some left over on the comprssor pind use a small grinder to remove it.
