Ker Frikkin BOOM - Caution for contractors

Came across these photos of a van blown to pieces. Apparently it WAS a plumbing contractors service vehicle. Cause was determined to be a leaking acetylene tank inside the van. When the owner activated the keyless entry, BOOM.

If you, or someone you know stores flammables inside the vehicle, you might want to think twice.

I hate it when my wife swaps the trunk button with the self destruct button.. so mean!

That would make for a great 'panic' button. Stealing my car? .. <press press> .. BOOM! Screw disabling the starter.. disable that spot on the map!

I would think that keeping large gas bottles inside of an enclosed vehicle would be against all sort of rules.

Stupid is as stupid does.

I guess that bulkhead laying on the lawn really is not doing much good now:eek: Holy carp!

I know many guys that do carry gasses on their trucks. Whats the bet that he did not have the hoses and regulator off and a cap screwed onto that tank?

That has got to be the biggest acetylene bomb I have seen...

I know that bigger companys will have any of their fleet trucks that handle/haul hazardous gasses retrofitted with a compartmet that vents to the outside, like a campers propane area.

Hey plumbers: is it common to use oxy/acetylene torches to solder copper pipe???

I thought everyone mainly used propane.

Not a plumber or boiler man, but my guy uses a lot of Mapp, so do I as it really throws some heat for sweating pipipe. Buddie mechanical contractor likes acetylene for bigger plumbing jobs, low temp brazing, etc. Propane for smaller stuff. But everyone likes what they like...

Interesting zoning codes they have in that neighborhood. Looks like the side yard setback is the width of a push mower. :D

I'm not a plumber, but I have done a bit of sweating, back when 50/50 tin/lead was available. Now, however, the lead's been removed and the solder is much harder to sweat with propane. Some use MAPP, some use acetylene w/o oxygen.

Yep! It's common. When you get up to 2"s and over, propane and mapp torches just do not have the flame size to keep the whole area heated. It's not just a matter of temperature. Acetylene only torches induce ambient air, otherwize you would just have a yellow flame w/ tons of black soot.

That reminds of back when I was a late teen, ............!;)

That,s how all of our shop trucks are set up just for that reason. Plus they are also vented out side.
