I need some help installing a kill switch. I have a 1985 90 HP Evinrude. A standard push to choke ignition switch. The kill switch has 4 terminals, 2 marked M and 2 marked C. Can anyone tell me which 2 terminals I should use on the kill switch and which 2 on the ignition that I should attach to? Thanks much.

Re: Kill switch wiring

Okay, do you have an electrical schematic of your engine?

One set of the switch contacts is normally open, the other set is normally closed. You can figure which are which with an ohmmeter. This makes it a universal switch.

If the engine is shut off by gounding an ignition control wire, one side of the normally closed contacts go to ground and the other side to the ignition kill wire. When the lanyard is inserted the contacts are open and the engine runs. When the lanyard is pulled the switch closes and kills the ignition.

Hopes this helps. If I saw a schematic I could tell you for sure how to wire it.

Re: Kill switch wiring

Hi Chuck,
Thanks for the reply. I have a service manual for the engine that I got from the library, it has ignition schematics. I'll take a look at that and perhaps I can figure which terminals will close it. Thanks.

Chuck,

The schematic shows, with a heavy line between the 2 M terminals that the ignition is off. Do you believe this means I should wire the 2 M terminals of the kill switch to the 2 M terminals of the ignition? As you may recall the kill switch has 2 C and 2 M terminals. Thanks........

That sound reasonable to me. Make sure you install the lanyard before testing. If the engine doesn't start, disconnect the safety switch. If it starts, pull the lanyard and make sure it stops.
