Were almost done with the kitchen remodel...

Cabinets should be in next week, I'm finishing up the wiring right now.

Cabinets are full height on the ends, low in the middle with no upper bulkhead.

Any suggestions to types of ambient lighting? Rope, Flourecent, LED, LV? I'm just not sure what I want to go with.

Really like to put some lights in the kick plate, but havn't found anything.

For under the cabinets, I plan on doing 1 switch to turn on flourecents, with a rocker switch on each one. to turn each individual one off if desired.

We are also just about finished with a kitchen remodel. We have only the cabinets left to go.

For ighting we used halogens everywhere except our under cabinet stuff is flourecent. IMO flourecent can be too "hard" of a light against the wood of the cabinet. The halogens arent as "white" but are much softer.

I don't have the greatest picture examples right now, but you can get a feel of what we decided on.......

Kitchen is looking great there Pony
Gotta love the work bench in the dinning room. we are so tired of tools being EVERWHERE.

I'll be putting up a page soon with all our pictures, we've converted the garage into 2 bedrooms, complete gut of kitchen. Turn other bedroom into Dining room, remodel 3rd bedroom, new floor throughout.... all in 3 months.

LOL yeah tools were becoming quite a pain. It was upsetting the women in the house for us to keep going in and out for tools because it was so cold and we kept tracking snow through the house...........the extra piece of subfloor does the trick8)

Also in the middle of a Kitchen redo. I'm using can lights in the ceiling and halogen adjustable spots under cabinet lights. The Wife said no more fluorescent lights anywhere. We will have one light fixture in the center of the Kitchen that will be on a separate switch from the can lights. Rope lights for above the cabinets. So undercabinet, center light fixture and above cabinet lighting will all be on separate switches. Went with the Maple cabinets. Put the hardwood floor (Bellawood Brazilian Cherry) in last weekend. All new electric and plumbing. Base cabinets were put in yesterday and the Granite guy came out to make a template today. 2 week wait on that. Top cabinets will be installed by Monday and the wiring hook-up completed. And yes, what a mess it is....Looks like a few more weeks of living in the jungle....

If you are using dark high gloss granite countertops you might have issues with reflectons of the bottom of the cabinets on the countertops.I have seen it where its almost like a picture of the bottom of the cabinet on the countertop. To minimize this use undercabinet lights with frosted diffusers. Lots of halogen ucl's have clear diffusers...you will see each bulbs reflection on the countertop. Dont use the halogen hockey puck ones either because of the exposed wiring. They are cheap so you could buy one and see how bad it reflects but then you would have to wait til the countertops are installed. Test it under different conditions...night, day, other lights on, off, stand at different locations, ect. also..you can also mount them farther away from the wall instead directly on the back corner..if halogen lights are used...dont put the butter dish on the bottom shelf..lol

Use xenon under cabinets with frosted lenses as divo says. Xenon produces far less heat than halogen, while still producing the nice, white, crisp light. I would also recommend using a dimmer on them.

Just food for thought

http://www.ccrane.com/

I bought a couple of their 60 watt led bulbs.
They draw like 3 watts and I love the light from them.
Run cool/warm to touch
Great for porch lights, reading lights and indirect lighting.
They do not work that well for over head lighting
We are going to use them above our counters also.

They can be bought for either 120VAC or 12 VDC

Re: Kitchen lighting suggestions?

Well, we are just about there. Some crowne molding and it's done. Xenon puck under cabinet lights with frosted lens (On dimmer), white rope lighting on top of cabinets and can lighting (5) in the ceiling (Also on dimmer). We also installed a small light fixture in the center. Thought about toe kick lights, but decided against them. I hid the wiring from the puck lights by routing a track in finished maple 1X's (Matches the cabinets) and attached them to the bottom of the cabinets with small screws. Worked well. Anyway, it's good to have a Kitchen again and yes, I'm glad it's over. But it was worth it...
