Knee injury question

On sat we were palying a pick up tackle football game in the snow. And I was going to tackle this guy, and my teammate came to tackle him at a 90 degree angle to me. Our knees collided at full speed. His hit mine just a hiar below the knee cap on the outside of my left knee.

It hurt a lot, and i did not play anymore. I was barley able to limp back to the car. I guess my question was if i torn anything up inside my knee, would i still be able to walk on it? I figured not that i can limp around, and it seems to slowly be getting better, that i don't need to go to the doctor.

Someone said they heard a pop, when we collided. But I figured if it torn an acl, i would not be walking on it. It can take full weight, but if i move in a weird direction, or more my foot in a certain way it hurts.

I just don't wanna pay another insurance co-pay for the hospital.

Re: Knee injury question

I have had two meniscus surgeries, and in both cases my knee hurt, and was swollen but I was able to walk around just fine. It would just pop when I moved it in a certain way.
The big surprise is that I have had an ACL replacement for a torn ACL. I was able to walk around for the most part without pain, but what the torn ACL does do is cause you to lose stabliziation in the knee. This would manifest in my knee not being able to support me when I stepped in a certain way. Specifically when I went downstairs my knee would inexplicably "give out".
The level of instability due to an ACL tear would depend on the degree of the tear. With a small tear my doctor would not recommend surgery, but rather therapy to re-stabilize the knee. Unfortuately mine was almost completely severed, necessitating a full replacement.
Go see your doctor. In my experience the only thing that comes from ignoring knee injuries is re-aggrivating or exacerbating said injuries.

Rest, ICE(15min every two hours), and elevate(especially while icing) for three days. If you can't rest it, at least use a knee brace to limit the movement. Then have it looked at by a physician. Ligaments hold the joint together like mooring lines, they allow the joint to move, without hitting it's limits. Most of the time(like walking) you don't "need" all the support they offer, but when you turn or stop they hold the joint.

I have had surgery on both knees to remove the cartridge that separates the knee joint and provides a cushion for the bones. A torn cartridge is common and painful and if that is what happened to you it will not heal . At this point I would wrap my knee with an elastic support and go easy for a week or so and see what happens. If it is no better in 2 weeks you will have to see the doctor.

I had a torn ACL and meniscus for over 10 years before I got it repaired.I could actually run fine in a strait line, but it would pop out pretty easily if you were standing still and turned quick.Sometimes you would barely feel it,but the odd time it would bring tears to your eyes.It won't get any better if something is torn.Get yourself to a Doctor before you do anymore damge.

Re: Knee injury question

You may not want to, but you need to see the doc. I had surgery on my right knee, and now need it on my left knee. My right knee was okay until I would kneal down to work on equipment next to the floor. I would go to get up and my knee would lock. It got very painful to straighten out.

I'm waiting until next years boating season to get my surgery done. Yep, I can lay around inside my cabin cruiser for several weeks. I'm sure I can get dock workers to bring me some bait from the marina. :D

You can be perfectly functional with a knee injury... but it will give you misery until you get it fixed. When it starts hurting bad enough for long enough you'll go to the doc... co-pay or not.

Time for an MRI to see what you've done.

Re: Knee injury question

after 3 to 4 days my knee was feeling a lot better. now it has been about 10 days, and it feels good now. its maybe 70 % better. I can still feel it, but it really doesn't hurt much.
I figure there is nothing a doctor can do to fix my knee short of surgery. And i prob did not do anything that will require surgery. So all the doc will say is to rest it and ice it.

My knee itself did not really hurt, it was more like 2 inches below the knee.

thanks for all of your advice thou.

Sometimes my wife and I think back about all our years and we are amused and amazed at the amount of major surgery we have avoided...........with poverty. Includes serious shoulder injury and neck injury. Both just fine now with careful gentle chiropractic treatment. She is dealing with a knee with no cartilage left, so I guess we'll have to go get a replacement put in.

Re: Knee injury question

Just go to a graveyard and dig up a replacement knee. Then just swap the parts out like an old car.
