knife connection, what purpose?

Is there a specific reason the "knife" connection is used for my shift wires? I would like to just replace them with plain old male/female connectors. I think they would be easier to work with since the old "knife" ones have seen better days.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Dan

The knife connectors would fit thru the passages when removing the lower unit. Some bullet types may fit too. And the rubber covers worked well to seal the knife connectors easily. <br /><br />Just a size issue really. But it always seems to boil down to size even if she says it really doesnt matter.
