knock in engine

I have a 40 hp force...'98 model. It was running fine until last sat....Had it wot for about 10 min. when suddenly we heard a knock in the engine. stopped and put in neutral and knock goes away. Put in forward and hear the knock. Have not had any trouble until now...any ideas???

Is the noise coming from the motor or the lower unit on the motor?

If it is coming from the engine you might want to get a compression test done.

Did you find out the problem? I have a simular problem with my 96 Force 40HP. Mine is a clicking (pretty loud) while engine is running. Motor starts and runs ok but there is a problem.
