Knocking noise coming from my dog clutch

I Have a 1988 V8 350 with the OMC out drive. The problem i have is when i put it in forward gear just idling in drive i feel what appears the drive to be knocking in and out of gear. Once i give it throttle it knocks hard once then runs just fine at higher speeds. Not sure what to look at first any help would be appreciated. Not sure if it is the dog clutch or what it is.

Fill out your profile so we know where your operating your boat.Fresh/salt water makes a difference.Sounds like the c/dog isn't engaging right.The shift cable might be sticking.
Get a diagram of the drive/transom assembly.Look for the bell crank.
Those older drives would leak and water/corrosion would build up and cause hard shifting.Take the drive off and see if that helps after you clean it out.J
