L-Drive Overheating?

OK folks - a little backgound:
Last year taken out my Bayliner with a 1989 85HP l-drive, I would set off my overheat alarm after about five to ten minutes. Got a lot of good advice from fellow boaters here - ended up changing impeller, head gasket, exhaust gasket and thermostat over the course of the summer. Nothing helped so I tore out motor and brought it in the house for the winter. Just started tearing it down and discovered a large chunk of rubber stuck in a coolant hole in the spacer plate. My questions are this:

1 Would this cause it to overheat?
2 (Assuming it came from old impeller) Where else should I be looking for rubber pieces in bottom end?
3 Can anyone tell me water circuit - how does water flow from impeller thru engine?

Re: L-Drive Overheating?

Sorry guys - one more question - in my manual it shows a exhaust plate between powerhead and exhaust manifold (gaskets on either side). My motor does not have one - is it supposed to be there or did some come without?

Re: L-Drive Overheating?

I have the same boat as you with the same exact problem. However, I have not started this project yet but soon will once it starts warming up. The last time I ran the boat was in 06 but I can remember it overheating about every 10 minutes. I just recently purchased a water pump for it and an exhaust hose to start but I have read more than one story similar to yours so maybe we could work together on this.

Re: L-Drive Overheating?

I'll keep you up to date brlanha, unfortunately I won't be able to tell you anything for a couple of months yet. Up here in northern Ontario, our boating season is quite short!
On this spacer plate on the bottom of the engine, there is a small port that the water flows thru - not quite sure why it is so small (1/4" diameter - perhaps to meter water going in to engine???) but I would think any kind of debris would plug it up.

Re: L-Drive Overheating?

Well I replaced the thermostat, and tore down the lower unit this past weekend. Im replacing the water pump in it now and will see what happens. There is a hose outside on top of the L-drive that goes over 2 barbed fittings. It is the hardwall water intake hose part #32-F695259-2 which is no longer available did you ever replace this?

Re: L-Drive Overheating?

Scottie , brlanha Hello have either of you found a reason for the overheating ,as I'm am having the same problem.I have a 1990 force L-drive ( curses under breath) but 120 hp and it does the same thing. I have rebuilt , repaired, and replaced everything that needed it. Like most boats that sit it had many worn and neglected parts . Fortunately the engine and lower unit where in great working order mostly ;). Here is a short list and solutions to each with the exception of the overheating. They are not in order of repair BTW for anyone who wants to yell.

1 Compression 120 ish all around

2 No spark on one cdi pack bad found out stator had two pinched wires from a previous repair ( not mine ). Went to a boat salvage yard and was able to buy an entire ignition of an 120 OB problem gone.

3 Weak fuel pressure rebuilt the fuel pump done.

4 Replaced impeller and housing, two for that matter with a third in my truck in case my overheating is again the impeller which I'll get to shortly

5 Shift cable the one thing I had not fixed or realized it needed repair right up until I go to my 10 th or so channel marker :( bungee cords FTW )

6 Misc crap new bowler and hose ,fuel filter, cleaned carbs ,new plugs , fuel plup, rebuilt stater, and flushed and cleaned fuel tank.

Yes it has been a very busy few weeks thankfully I am able to do all of my own repairs.

Which brings me to the reoccurring overheating problem . Now I have not taken the second impeller out and checked it so it very well could be that I have cewed up another one. I will do so tomorrow after work and post an update. If in fact I have killed the impeller AGAIN why? I brought the boat home hooked up the muffs ran it, about 5 minutes and bamm overheat alarm shut it down. I started to check for any sorts of blockage ,if the impeller is fine and I do have something stuck is there a way can it be cleaned without removing or taking the engine apart. 1990 Bay liner L-Drive 120 Capri can I remove the exhaust without yanking the entire power head?

A few final thoughts LU screens to impeller clean , impeller into head/thremo clean, and head to exhaust clean. There is a wheezing sound when I use a house to check for junk.Sounds as if there may be something in the exhaust.

Any suggestions that might help short of disassembling the power head would be wonderful.

EDIT: Removed my power head followed by the exhaust manifold and the head found chucks of old impeller ,sand, salt , and who knows what else clogging the water flow. So far I've ran it and no overheating will try tomorrow in the water.
