Well I have my 1980 50 Merc's lower unit just about apart. I just need to know if I need to remove the shifter assembly to remove the drive and prop shafts. If so, is the locking nut on the shifter shaft counter or clockwise to undo. It's really in there tight and I don't want to wack it the wrong way. Am I on the right track or is there a differant way of removing those shafts? I have a bearing in there that is really howling and I want to replace it.

I take it your name is Nick..Welcome aboard mate..

Just leave the shift shaft where it is, and by the way it's the normal anti-clockwise to undo. The prop-shaft should pull out of the housing so long as you have undone the big plastic nut. Be careful when pulling out, you'll have a little square key that needs retrieving and look out for large round shims that give the correct gear slack you can't miss them but make sure they go back.

Best of luck Keith B...

P.S. When I first broke mine apart I thought the main driveshaft had to come out first. Well let me tell you you can leave the main drive shaft in as well as the shift shaft and still take out the prop shaft and forward and reverse gears..

Got it! Thanks a bunch. Accually my name is Ken not Nick, I just couldn't think of a "Nick Name" when I registered. :>
