i have a 1989 merc 8o hp....this used motor i just got the buzzer went off 5 minutes into riding it the water was pumping out great the buzzer in the control box was going off... i shut it off it would not start, check batt conection it started right up ran great. got full tank of gas i beat on it and it ran good wot for a few miles then i brought it back it and add oil to injection tank next to motor it took only about 8 oz but i burned at least 5 gal gas, does these motors have and kill features to shut motor down if oil is not pumping right....the motor is fresh water and clean as new inside case

No kill feature if low on oil. Was the buzzer going beep...beep... beep or a solid beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep? Beep...Beep...Beep is low oil warning. Solid beeeeeeeeeeeep is overheat.

Your oil injection if working correctly can get up to 100:1 mixture at idle and up to 50:1 at cruise. Depends on how you were running the engine.

so is it possible to use 8-10 oz of oil to 5 gal gas??? it did not beep too long but it was steady but not loud, then whent away. could a loose batt conection cause this.....
what would you try next weekend, should i pull plugs and see if they are too clean , meaning lack of oil????
thank for all replys, motor runs great and is clean and pumping water like crazy, i just dont want to burn it up or disconect oil injection that may work

8 ounces of oil in 5 gallons is not out of hand. If you got a steady beep, it's overheating. Just because it's putting out water out the pee hole does not mean the water pump is fuctioning properly. It could be getting weak and should be replaced if there is any doubt of it's age. Do you know when the last time is was replaced? The last time the T-stats were checked or replaced?

the t stat were not replaced in at least a couple of years, moror rus and looks new is it possible they were sticking then freed up because this was first long ride this year...should i replace the t stats or keep a eye on it, also if tstats were sticking would engine still pump water out like crazy nice steady flow...

Yes it would still pump if your t stat is stuck as the water is routed through the by-pass valve..

Good luck Keith..

I would buy new ones. They are only about 10 bones. You can buy a manual from this web site or most part dealers. I like the clymer manual, and wouldn't know what to do with out it when a problem arives.
