Just curious how other areas are faring this spring. Here we had hardly any snowfall this winter and thus no runnoff to speak of. We have had no rain yet to help remedy the situation, So our lakes are anywhere from 1-5 foot low with 3 foot about average.

this is going to raise heck with boat ramps as well as fishing for spawning crappies, many productive bays are dry, They will have to spawn SOMEWHERE guess I will just have to find them.

The good news is the ice went off the small lakes last night and the large ones wont be far behind.

Cant fish walleyes or northerns till Opener on May 10th, so its panfish till then.

Horrible here in the straits. L Michigan and L Huron are quite low. My guess is at least 5 feet. Of course it has ben receeding faster then my hairline over the last couple of years, But if you look at the rust lines on the seawalls and such, it is definatly way down. since last year, ohh maybe a little over a foot. Brand new launch barely fits my 18'!
Craig

I just returned today from Kootenay lake in
British Columbia. We spent 5 days on the lake
catching Bull Trout and Rainbows. The weather
was great it only rained one night the rest of
the time sun shine and calm. Largest fish was
11 lbs. largest rainbow 7 lbs All fish were
caught on or near the surface with polarbear
flies. One small Rainbow was caught at 75 ft on
downrigger with glow hootchie and dodger.
What a great way to start the season!
The water level seemed normal for this time of
year. Very very deep.

Re: Lake Water Levels

My favorite lake, elevenmile, is still down 20 feet with no boat ramps available. Too bad too, since they stocked it with thousands of nice salvage trout and salmon, from a lake that was drained.

Lake Pueblo, where I was at today, is down about 30 feet from normal. I has an abundance of bait fish this year, so larger fish are not as hungry.

So much for western lakes in dry times :(

Marty

Re: Lake Water Levels

L Michigan is definitely down 4 or 5'. Effecting tributaries below the last dam. Fox River emptying into Green Bay is way low. Can't use launches on west side at the fair grounds--only 8 inches of water!!!! Really messing up the slips and launches in Door County.

Central WI lakes are a little low, some flowages and rivers are lower. Been battling this for 4 years. I have heard the southern WI lakes and rivers are very low.

Here we have had a ton of rain and some good snowfall this winter. Lakes are up to normal and above. A stark change from the drought last summer. I just hope it stays this way.

Re: Lake Water Levels

Lake Michigan is in bad shape!!! The bay in Traverse City has receded so badly there is enough room in front of the waterfront hotels to put in another row of hotels. 5 or 6 years ago the water was up to the edge of the hotels sandy beaches. Now, there are hotels with 300 feet of grass/weeds/muck....All of the smaller ramps have been removed, as even the end of the ramps are completely out of water. Any ramps put out now, are starting out about 100 feet further than they used to be. The East arm of the bay is just about a lost cause, even last year it was iffy going through it. I hope this changes soon, it is really getting ridicuously low around here!!!

Here is Ga, we've been getting gobs of rain. Many lakes (Lanier, Clark Hill) that have been low for years are full. Don't know what summer will bring but its nice right now.

Re: Lake Water Levels

Neumanns,

I put my boat in lake LeHommedeu today (Alexandria) and damn near punctured the bottom due to low water levels (out in the middle of the lake). My father said he's never seen it this low. It worries me because I'm new as it is and dont know the lakes all that well. I wasn't the only one to have problems. A lot of the bigger boats were having difficulty even launching and only the little boats were able to get under the bridges.

Mike

Re: Lake Water Levels

Here on Lake Wylie near Charlotte, NC the boat ramps were closed from lack of water about the middle of last summer. This year we are almost 5 inches above normal rainfall so the lake is at full pond, we had over 5 inches of rain last week. Hopefully this summer will be normal and the drought is over.

Re: Lake Water Levels

being on the nation's largest estuary, i'm sure this snow and runoff will affect the bay in salinity levels. not sure how it will affect the striper and crabbing season. guess we'll see-

Re: Lake Water Levels

The main lake I fish is Lake St. Claire. I haven't been out yet, due to cold weekends and other odds and ends, but I have heard it is about a foot up. This is great news as it has been going down for several years, and it is the most used lake in Michigan.
