Larson 310 Cabrio refurb - need paint advice

Hello,

I have spent the winter months renovating the cabin on my 310 Cabrio. The renovation consisted of removing the existing carpeting, flooring, cabinetry, tables and steps. Once everything was removed, I installed a teak/holly floor, built new cabinets / tables /steps, and veneered some of the walls. I also installed a new sound system. I will attach a few before and after pics in another email.

Now that the cabin is done, I am contemplating changing the color of a portion of the hull. The gel is currently an off white, but I would like to have a blue "stripe" on the hull. Here's a picture of the current color and what I would like it to look like:

I am torn between using gel or paint. I spent a considerable amount of time lerking on this forum as well as others and I somewhat understand the process of both. My questions boil down to, which would be better paint or a colored gel :) Since we are talking about the middle hull (between the waterline and the rub rail), I am concerned with dock and bumper dings so I am not sure if paint would really hold up or if it is easily touched up. All of the boats I have had in the past, have had colored gel coats so I have no experience with owning a painted boat.

So, my questions are as follows:

- Paint or colored gel?
- Best paint to use? (I was thinking Interlux Brightside's, but Perfection may be an option)
- Will rolling/tipping truely provide a professional looking job or is spraying the best option?
- I know very little about colored gel's or how to apply them, any pointers or links to posts that talk about it? I know they need to be sprayed and I currently have a HVLP gun with a remote pot that I use for wood finishes.
- Any other suggestions for a newbie?

Thanks

Tim

Hello Tim and welcome to Iboats..

There are pros and cons to each product.

Gelcoat can be blown on there in a matter of a few days. Now comes the part that everyone Hates..Sand & Buff.
Your HVLP gun will not work with gel.

Paint..gonna take some time to prep for primer..apply primer..prep for paint..apply paint etc.

Remember also .. the Value of the boat can swing up or down depending on the outcome of the finished product.

IF It was me I would use one of two products for my paint. Awcraft2000 or Imron.

Trying to recommend a product or process for your size boat and your experience is tricky.

Do you have a place ( shop ) to do this ?
What is your budget ?
What is your timeline ?

You might consider getting a few quotes from reputable shops to just see how much it would cost ( some shops are in a real hurt right now and you might get a Bargain price ).

Thanks for the response. Here are the answers to your questions:

Do you have a place ( shop ) to do this ? Sort of. The boat is stored in a storage unit where each unit is covered and has a individual garage door. The unit's are seperated with chicken wire on the inside. I only have about 30" from the side of the boat to the walls so spraying would be difficult but painting would be fine. Could also pull the boat out, do my thing then move it back in.

What is your budget ? To do it myself 1k at the most. To hire it out, up to 3k.
What is your timeline ? Soon...it's almost boating season :)

I looked at hiring it, but I am in Raleigh, NC and they only do this type of work down at the coast (about 3 hours away). Some of the places I called are looking for around 4k-5k for paint. I am unable to find someone that does a gelcoat. When I was in Florida, I had someone that was going to paint for 3k...should have done it when I was down there :)

If I go with paint, I wanted to stay with a acrylic poly due to ease of touchup but I have read it is not as durable as a polyester poly (awlgrip). Then again, I also read that awlgrip isn't very durable due to the way it seperates when it cures. I am not sold on Interlux, and have read some good things about both Awcraft and Imron. Is there any benefit of using a two part over a 1 part? Have you rolled/tipped Alwcraft or Imron?

Thanks

Tim

You would first need to find an appropriate spot to do this.

Awlcraft and Imron are basically the same thing ( acrylic urethane ). Repairable. Spray only.

Awlgrip ( LP ) is a linear polyurethane ( not a polyester poly ) It is tough as nails. Brushable but not so repairable/blendable.

Depending on the level of finish your expecting .. you may want to hold off and save your $$ for a shop to do it.

There are others here that have more knowledge on the rollin'n'tippin. Hopefully they can give you an idea of what its going to take as far as cost, time and outcome.

That interior looks very nice. I normally am not a fan of house styled cabinets and trim work in boats, but yours looke near perfect!!
