 I hope someone can help us out here.

I have a (I think) 1989 225 Black Max that was bought second hand and has probably had a hard life. It is used to pull skiers and it breaks down under load (although from time to time it won't rev over about 2200)

The engine generally starts well but a bit smokey and usually runs ok with just 1 person in the boat. Once a couple of people are on board and a skier on the back, it just won't get out of the hole - it revs to about 2200 (rough too) and that's it. If we rev it to around 3000 and slot it into gear, it will usually pull off the hole shot.

The problem has been getting worse over the past year (first it only occurred in the 2nd half of the session to now it happens any time). So for we have: replaced both coil packs, re-plumbed the fuel system, replaced the head gasket on the right side (one cylinder was leaking water). Compression is now ok (since the new gasket).

Not sure where to go next. The latest suggestion is the stator(s). Any comments??? Can they be tested before replacement?
