Does anyone know of a good electronics repair forum? Sorta like our engine repair forum where you have actual true experts. I have searched for a while for a decent forum but couldn't find any. Most of them are wannabe and the majority of their advices are to replace the monitor instead of how to fix a specific problem.

Here is a great place to start. It is Samuel Goldwassers site and there is probably more information here in one place than anywhere else you might look.He has all the bases covered and can link you to parts suppliers and anything else you might need.If you have any specific questions you should post them for our review.Ron G

Re: LCD Monitor problem

I got an Optoma Panoview PV880 with horizontal lines across the entire screen. It got a 50% chance of being a bad inverter, 30% being the main board and 20% being the lcd itself. I could order an inverter but if it didn't fixed the problem then I would be out 80 bucks for nothing. If the problem is either the main board or the lcd then she's done. Check it out.

Re: LCD Monitor problem

It doesn't sound like an inverter problem to me as the inverter just powers the backlight(s).

Re: LCD Monitor problem

It is tough to tell from that blurry video what it is,I seem to detect a low amplitude signal as being part of the problem but horizontal lines through the picture would be diagnosed in the old days as problems in the damper circuit which is supposed to extinguish (dampen) the electron beam (sweep) on the retrace cycle so that you do not see the retrace beam on your screen.
I would have to see a schematic of the circuit to troubleshoot it but I have a feeling it will turn out to be poor filtering (leaky capacitor) or a bad ground (cold solder joint).
It looks like you are using it as a monitor for a computer. If so try changing the sweep rates,(refresh rates) and see if that changes anything.Ron G

Re: LCD Monitor problem

if you are handy tear it apart and look for Bulging caps...usually it is the caps that go bad and they just need replaced...

to buy an invertor or panel is going to cost more than the monitor is worth...if you can solder than you can easily buy the caps and replace them yourself...easy fix with the right tools...

Re: LCD Monitor problem

Already had it apart before I made the first post. Checked the caps, didn't seemed bad, that's why I'm hesistating on buying parts. Beside, I can't even find the replacement caps. The numbers on them are very cryptic and may have been made to order using Hitachi(manf. of the inverter board) specs. This monitor is kinda old and it's not an ordinary Dell or HP or what have you. It's definetely not a "disposable". A comparable new monitor goes for $1500 bucks on newegg.

Big touch screen, sux to be you.

$80 for a 50% chance at fix. Odds are good, as long as you understand it is gambling and can take a miss with a good attitude.
