Hello.....I have 5 group 27 & 30 deep cycle marine batts sittin in the garage that are dead.......

Is there a way to get the lead out of em and use it to pour lures and weights?????......

I melted 80lbs of tire weights with a buddy last night and don't want to go through that again.......

Since the batts are dead the acid shouldn't be very strong......Can I crack it and let the acid/water evaporate?????....Thanks in advance for any suggestions.......Warren

I would take them to a recycler, Warren.

Both lead and sulphuric acid are hazardous materials that must be handled in special ways to conform to environmental law.

Man, if you try to recycle a battery yourself the enviro-Nazi’s will skin you alive. So I can’t tell you the sulfuric acid from your battery can be highly diluted with tap water and used in your garden or on your lawn, or that a battery can be rinsed and disassembled and the lead (and brass) can be recycled. That would be irresponsible of me so I suggest it is better to take your battery to a recycle center where they (not you) get paid as much as $3-5/unit for them, only to ship it to a recycle center in Mexico (too toxic to recycle here) where they dump the undiluted acid on the ground...

Lead is a hazard only when in vapor...or if moving in small pieces at 1000ft/sec...or if you drop your battery on your foot.

Any of the Interstate battery stores take them, as well as other places that sell new batteries...including Costco in my area.

I'm sure glad you didn't tell him that if you mix a base, like one that's formed when you disolve baking soda in water, and mix it with an acid you neutralize the acid. Of course he'd have to know that it's not all neutralized until the baking soda solution doesn't cause anymore fizzing.

Alright.....Won't mess with it....

Sears used to give you $5 core credit for every batt.....Now they wouldn't even take em.....

Was just trying to find a way to get rid of these things....I'll check the phone book and find somewhere to take em.......Thanks for the comebacks and saving me from blowing my package off...........Warren

Just about every county in the country has a recycle site for disposal of paint, chemicals, batteries, etc. Check your yellow pages or call the city offices where you live.

If the battery is "toast" the lead plates will be coated with lead sulfate so the lead would be almost useless. You would need to charge the battery so that the lead sulfite is oxidized to Lead Dioxide on one terminal, and the other terminal is reduced back to free lead.

THEN you might be able to do something, but you will be very disapointed... AND yes I have tried it.
