I have a 1970 Johnson Outboard. It's in great condition but there is a small leak in the head. It looks like maybe the gasket dried out from years of sitting around. Is there a way to replace it or is it just finding the right torque?

Re: Leaking Head Question

I would replace the head gasket, they are pretty cheap. If it has been sitting for years I would also change the empeler in water pump.

Your frindley neighbor hood Johnson dealer will have parts.

Good luck!

Re: Leaking Head Question

Thanks Lee, Im new to this forum, I am actually new to the outboard world, I have also read that the recommended mixture is 50:1, do you think this would be ok? Do I need to add lead?

Re: Leaking Head Question

Yeper....50:1 mix.

Use 1 pint of TWC..3 two cycle oil to 6 gallons of 87 octane gas. No theirs no need to add lead.

That adding lead bussines is for old car engines or old tractors and trucks. Because of soft valve seats

AS you know 2 cycles dont have valves. Just intake and exaust ports in the bottom of cylinders.

Good Luck!.... Neighbor!
