Hi guys,
I also just posted below about the shift pin but got that one resolved... So we picked up this boat/engine at an estate sale, and it has been sitting in a garage for 15 years. I drained out the old gas (about 8 gallons), and changed spark plugs, lower gear oil, impeller/waterpump, and just fired it up.. its leaking a black oil out of a few holes.. it does not look blue and clean like the gear oil, and could smell like gasoline although could just be me thinking it does.
I googled it and sounds like it could be old residual oil in the system, or a possible leak from the shift lever? I don't want to keep running it if its a problem, so turned it off. I had originally started it up after getting it and it did not pee water, it instead was leaking water all throughout the lower unit, so i turned it off and have since then replaced the impeller/waterpump seals. It wasn't peeing water again this time, which I'm not sure if it needs rpm/warm up before it will do that, or if it should do it at idle, however it looked like it was not shooting water out of the LU which is an improvement.
EDIT: It is a 2001 Mercury 15hp 2 stroke
