Just removed my motor from the barrel after complete carb overhaul and new coil wires, cleaned & set points when I noticed LU oil dripping from the exhaust outlet. It is just a drip put it is still a leak and I would like to repair the problem if I knew what to work on. Haven"t used the motor on my boat for around 15 yrs. but do place it in the barrel every couple 3 or 4 years and run it a little. Runs like a sewing machine in the barrel when not in gear but when I put it into gear it doesn't seem to rev up like it should. Will take it to a lake or the river Mon. and see what happens. Appreciate any recommendations I may receive from you professionals.

Thanks...

Re: leaking oil out the exhaust

Ho-hum, here we go again with yet another oil dripping from the exhaust after running in a barrel. Sorry, but that is not all that unusual, and doesn't necessarily mean a gear oil leak. Check the gear oil and if it doesn't have water in it, stop worrying about that.

OK, now that I've said that, and not knowing what kind or size of motor we are working on, it may not be running on both cylinders (assuming it has more than one cylinder). That would mean the fuel is passing through the non-firing cylinder and going out the exhaust----that stuff you see dripping out the bottom. It picks up carbon particles from the exhaust pipe which turns it black and fools you into thinking it is gear oil.

Sorry about the absence of the particulars of my motor: it is a 1956 M/W 5hp model GG9002B. I am sure F_R you have diagnosed it correctly as it doesn't seem to be the type oil in the LU. I will replace the coils and coil wires and go from there. Will respond when I get them replaced.
Appreciate your help & expertise advice.

I just came in from looking at the coils and noticed a coil wire was not in the coil. Now, to make sure the coil wires are correctly on each coil how would you suggest to accomplish this? I thought about bringing the top cyl. to TDC and see which set of points are closed but can't remember if it is closed I want or open to assure which coil wire goes to the top plug.

Thanks....olliebird

Re: leaking oil out the exhaust

Ok guys, got the motor running as good as it has ever run. Made a very nice looking prop guard out of an ole piece of stainless steel I had laying around, very proud of it. So, everything was ready to go so I take off for the river this morning, motor ran like a sewing machine-----for about 5 min. and then this ole man got his heart broken, it seized up, have no idea what happened but brought it home and had it torn apart in about an hr., everything but access to the pistons. Decided I had already put too much time and effort into the ole girl so am going to scrap her. The lower unit still turns but thats about it. Want to thank you guys for your help in tuning her up , I must have screwed up someplace. Oh well at 80 yrs old it is nice to know you can still do some screwing even if it is screwing up......

Sorry to hear about your motor.

Same thing happened to my first motor. Ran great on my first run and then overheated because the thermostat was frozen shut. And apparently my overheat buzzer was also broken. Maybe a piston and ring replacement will fix yours. Mine is sitting and waiting for just that.

Good luck.
