I have an 88 4winns horizon 200 with a swim platform thats part of the boat, not the wooden bolt on ones...on the top of the platform, the ladder bolts to it on portside. The bolts from the ladder are a little loose, and I believe water gets in through there because there is dampness on the inside of the engine compartment in the same area the ladder is. Whats the best way to tackle this project to make sure it doesnt leak again. Obviously I need to tighten the bolts, but what sort of sealant do I apply to seal the holes??

I would try 3M 5200, or if you plan on removing it sometime in the future, then use 4200.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: leaking through bolt holes..how to fix??

I had the same problem 2 years ago. I found that the swim platform brackets had pitted and filled with salt water from being left in the water all season by previous owner. The transom wood was wet, so I removed screws, drilled the holes out with 3/8 drill bit. Filled the holes with marine tex, let setup. Sanded the marine tex and pilot drilled the holes for new scews. Coated the screws and swim platform brackets with 4200 and screwed back into place. Have not had an issue since.

I havent removed mine yet to see exactly what is going on, but it sound as if the bolts screw directly to the fiberglass/wood-theres no nut and washer behind it????

Sorry, but your transom has rot, and sealing the holes will not stop it.
Search repair in here.

From what I have read in here you should overdrill the holes and then fill it back in with epoxy. This will seal the sides of the hole against leaking. Then redrill through the epoxy, put the bolts through, and seal with 4200.
