update

-The weld did not hold, I placed the garden hose in the freeze plug and filled it up a little with water. I and then tilted the engine on the stand. Water leaked through the weld. I used JB weld over the weld and that seem to do the trick.

-I put the engine and outdrive back into the boat. I only replaced the exhauste bellow and seals that come in the gasket kit for removing the outdrive. I took it out to the lake and all was good. I brought it home yesturday and took the outdrive off one more time to make sure there was no water in the U-joint bellows. It was totally dry.

Conclusion - Water leaked through the freeze plug behind the flywheel and somehow managed to get to the Gimbal bearing and ruin it. Second conclusion, which everyone on here told me is that you should use expoxy and put away the welder.

Thanks to all for your help!!!!

Kevin

WOW... wish everyone had told me to use epoxy for the 6 inch crack in my block before I spent $1200 for a rebuilt long block....and that was CHEAP! The old motor was running great, just spitting out so much water that it was sinking the boat.

Randy,

Don't be too upset. At least you have piece of mind that it is not ever going to leak again. I have no idea if my patch job is going to hold long term.
